SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has suspended the import of Sunlight Brand drinks from Taiwan, for failing tests for the industrial plasticiser, DEHP.
AVA said the substance was found in Sunlight Brand Star Fruit Juice.
Consumers are advised not to consume the brand of beverages.
AVA has also instructed the importer of the product to remove it from the market and withhold it from sale immediately. DEHP is a plasticiser used to soften plastics and make them flexible.
It is not meant for food use and should not be added to food.
The Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) of DEHP as established by the European Union is 0.05mg/kg body weight per day.
Based on the level of DEHP detected in the sample of Sunlight Brand Star Fruit Juice, a 60-kg adult can drink up to 420g and a 30-kg child 210g of the juice every day over a lifetime without significant health risks.
However, consumers advised to discard the drink.
AVA said it has analysed 13 brands of Taiwan-made beverages so far, and 12 have passed the test.
Apart from drinks, it said Taiwanese jam and jelly will also be tested.
The public can refer to the AVA website for an updated list of brands that have been tested, or call the AVA hotline for queries.
