<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->IT WAS a marriage arranged in India to give Madam Baljeet Kaur Darshan Singh, 46, a life companion following her father's death two years ago.
The union with the Indian national 20 years her junior was rosy at first, but her husband's true intentions surfaced in September, barely three months after he moved here from Punjab.
Sukhbeer Singh started using his wife's ATM card to withdraw money from her account without her consent. He memorised the Personal Identification Number he had seen her use and, by the time of his arrest, had helped himself to $1,200 through a few withdrawals.
He pleaded guilty and was yesterday jailed for five months.
A heartbroken Madam Baljeet gave yesterday's court hearing a miss. They have not spoken since his arrest last month, she told The Straits Times.
'What's there to talk? I feel very disappointed. Heart pain...'
As she had wanted to get married after her father's death, her brother identified Sukhbeer as a potential husband and she flew to Punjab to meet him. They married shortly after, and in July, he came here to live with her.
Madam Baljeet found him 'very sweet' and 'very innocent' at first. They went shopping and for walks, and he used to meet her after she was done with her restaurant job. He was jobless.
Her brother noticed the withdrawals when he updated her bank passbook and found out from Madam Baljeet that she had not made the transactions.
The family confronted Sukhbeer about the withdrawals, but he denied making them. Then he apparently threw a fit in their relative's Jurong flat, hurled a small table, tore down a curtain and threatened suicide.
The police, who were called in, apprehended him. Madam Baljeet subsequently made a report against him for theft.
She said she was so traumatised by his betrayal that she neither ate nor slept for a few days. 'I didn't think he was capable of doing it. I did love him. He loved me, too, but what's on his mind, I don't know.'
She said she still wants someone to grow old with - though it is unlikely to be him now. Asked if she would visit him in prison, she said: 'I don't think I want to visit him - heart pain. Does he want to see me? I also don't know.'
