</p>
<p>Nearly four years ago, an Aboriginal man named Cameron Doomadgee was escorted into the police station on <font size="5">Palm Island</font>, off the coast of North Queensland. A healthy 36-year-old, he had never been in trouble with the law. An hour later, he was dead.
</p><!--proximic_content_off--> <!--proximic_content_on-->
<p>Mr Doomadgee had been involved in a scuffle inside the police station with the arresting officer, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley. An autopsy found Mr Doomadgee had<font size="5"> four broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and a liver "virtually cleaved in two"</font>. The injuries were described as similar to those of a car or plane crash victim.
</p>
<p>Queensland – governed for two decades by a despotic right-wing premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, with the assistance of an often brutal and corrupt police force – is still known as <font size="5">Australia's Deep North</font>. And there are few spots worse than Palm Island, founded as an Aboriginal penal colony and nowadays a byword for dysfunction and despair.
</p>
<p>Sgt Hurley's conduct was investigated by his friends; he even collected the detectives from the airport. He denied assaulting Mr Doomadgee, saying he must have fallen on him. The coroner decided Sgt Hurley caused the fatal inj-uries by punching him. However, no charges were laid.
</p>
<p>Uproar ensued and the case was reviewed. In June last year, Sgt Hurley stood trial on the mainland, where an all-white jury acquitted him of manslaughter. The verdict was greeted with jubilation by police officers, who had staged rallies in support of Sgt Hurley, claiming he had been "hung out to dry".
</p>
<p>Eight months later, prime minister Kevin Rudd apologised to indigenous Australians for their past treatment, vowing that "the injustices of the past must never, never happen again". On Palm Island, people were still grieving for Mr Doomadgee – and for his son, Eric, who hanged himself in 2006, and for Patrick Bramwell, another islander who comforted Mr Doomadgee as he lay dying in his cell. Mr Bramwell hanged himself last year.
</p>
<p>Mr Wotton could be jailed for life. Sgt Hurley, who was suspended on full pay for two years, has re<font size="5">turned to the police service and been promoted. He received a £40,000 payout</font>. An inquiry into allegations that he <font size="4">ran over an Aboriginal woman's foot and then drove off</font> concluded that he should receive counselling. Sgt Hurley has yet to be counselled.
</p>
<p><font size="3">Those who believe that Australia has cast off its racist past, or that a black man's life counts for much here</font>, or that Mr Rudd's apology in February has improved the lives of ordinary Aborigines, would do well to reflect on recent events on Palm Island.

It's been interesting that you've been posting in favour of my kinfolk recently, but since you are so supportive, I should point out that the term "abo" which you have been tossing around in a few of your other posts is not the appropriate way to refer to indigineous Australians (aborigines) - although you'll still hear it bantied around a little bit by the minority (usually in RSL clubs and the like), it is a very racist term that went "out of vogue" about 2 decades ago. Using this term is akin to calling an African-American the "N" word.

Just wanted to clarify for you, because I would hate for you to ever visit far Nth Qld or the Nothern Territory and call an aborigine that word - it would be a very deadly mistake indeed - literally. Cheers mate.

Lately, it seems that the attacks on Oz by the likes of you and shockshit are intensifying. It seems more like a whole lot of Sinkees are planning their exit strategies to Oz taking into account the fact that Sinkeeland is in a bitter recession now. Your papaya masters, I guess your are probably having butterflies in their stomach and are shitting out in their pants knowing the fact that a lot of Sinkees are planning to leave. As such, it seems like all these are desperate attemps by them to scare Sinkees. Those who are going to be scared of all these are better of staying and rotting in Sinkeeland. Migration is not exactly a bed of roses but I always believe in the saying, if the going gets tough, the tough gets going and its the tough ones that Oz needs, not whimpering weaklings like shockshit :biggrin:

Truth??? What is the truth??? $9 sandwiches???? Someone earning $60k paying $18k taxes???? Hey moron. I'm earning $126k now, more than twice this amount you have stated and I have sandwiches for less than $5. Even my tax is not $18k. It all boils down to tax planning, understand idiot??? No??? I don't blame you because your brain is smaller than a pea. Since you have admitted that you are so stupid enough to pay $18k taxes for earning $60k, Sinkeeland is the best for you. Stay there and rot like the pathetic born loser cockroach you are. :oIo:

Sydney voted world's favourite city again

02 Mar 2008

NSW Premier Morris Iemma today welcomed the news that Sydney has yet again been voted "the number one city brand in the world" in the annual Anholt City Brands Index.

"Sydney has taken out the number one ranking ahead of London, Paris, Rome and New York – and there are plenty of good reasons why," Mr Iemma said.

"Sydney has shown that it is not just a great tourist destination, it is truly a global city, ranked top of the class for beauty, climate and friendliness.

"Importantly, the index also found that Sydney is seen as one of the top three cities for employment and business opportunity.

"This vote of confidence in our city is a great credit to Sydneysiders and the local tourism industry as well as the public amenities of transport, schools and hospitals."

"While there is more work to be done, the people of NSW have much to be proud of in the high quality services being delivered everyday across NSW.

"Winning this title for a second year confirms independently what we already know – Sydney is a truly great city of which we can all be proud."

Mr Iemma said Sydney's number one position wasn't a fluke.

"We will continue to work hard to deliver on our commitment to improve services in Sydney and across NSW."

Index report author and leading authority on the images of cities and countries Simon Anholt said: "Sydney is seen as a modern, globalised city with very good infrastructure and economic potential, as well as being culturally diverse.

"It is no exaggeration to say that Sydney is as close to having a ‘perfect place brand' as any city can have."

Forty cities were assessed for the index, which surveyed more than 10,300 people in 20 countries.

Executive Director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, Patricia Forsythe, said that the index demonstrates Sydney's competitive advantage as a business destination.

"Sydney is unique in its combination of great lifestyle and economic opportunity," Mrs Forsythe said.

"Sydney's prosperity is directly related to its cultural diversity and social vibrancy.

"Our globalised economy and engagement with the Asia Pacific ensures our ongoing development and competitiveness."

International entrepreneur and co-owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs Peter Holmes a Court said, "The great thing about Sydney is that it has it all - a business culture that takes on the world, a sporting culture second to none and a lifestyle that is the envy of the world".

Artistic Director and CEO of the Sydney Festival, Fergus Linehan, said "Sydney is unique in the way it offers environments that rarely sit side by side - a strikingly beautiful natural setting, a major commercial hub and a culturally rich and diverse metropolis – all making for a perfect platform for our international Festival.

"The recent growth in attendances across all art forms and the enhanced cultural infrastructure are testament to this wonderful city's sophistication, international outlook and sense of fun. There's simply nowhere in the world like it."

Sydney voted top city in the worldRosemary Ryan

Sydney has been voted the number one city in the world for the 13th time at the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller Awards in New York, the Minister for Tourism Jodi McKay announced today.

For a record 20th year in a row, readers of the influential American travel magazine also voted Sydney the top city in the Australia-Pacific Cities category.

“13 years at number one and 20 in a row as the best city in the Australia Pacific region is a fantastic achievement and a strong endorsement by the discerning readers of Conde Nast,” McKay said.

The magazine described Sydney as; Laid-back, vibrant and gorgeous. The city has food to rival any in the world, and is at the forefront of cutting-edge design, with chic hotels and excellent restaurants.

In the Awards, Sydney outranked other global cities including San Francisco, Florence and Cape Town. Conde Nast Traveller magazine has a paid circulation of 770,000 in the US and a readership of 3.1 million.

“Our laid-back lifestyle along with the city’s iconic attractions, the beauty of our natural environment, the eclectic nightlife and gourmet restaurants are part of what makes Sydney so appealing to international visitors,” Mckay said.

The Awards have been running for 21 years and Sydney has won the top city award from 1988 – 2008 in the Asia Pacific Cities category.
