Negligent taxi driver charged with causing death

By Elena Chong

A TAXI driver was charged on Friday with causing the death of his front seat passenger and injuring another.

Ong Poh Hin, 47, allegedly failed to keep a proper lookout while driving along the Pan-Island Expressway on Oct 2, resulting in his cab hitting the back of a trailer and causing the death of Chinese national Liu Kuiyi, 28.

Mr Liu, a kitchen help, died nine days later in hospital.

Ong is also said to have caused hurt to Mr Liu's colleague, Mr Wang Xin, 27, who was seated at the back, by doing an act so negligently as to endanger life or the personal safety of others.

A pre-trial conference date has been set for Jan 31.

If convicted, Ong faces a jail term of up to two years and/or a fine for causing death through negligence.

The other offence is punishable with a jail term of up to six months and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
