Child pornography shame of York student

A STUDENT is facing jail after being caught with hardcore child pornography videos on his computer at the University of York. Jonathan Wong, 23, who lives on the Heslington campus, had built up his secret hoard of lengthy and “graphic” movies featuring girls as young as six over more than a year.

The case came to light after fellow students became suspicious about audio files on the university’s internal network, and alerted campus authorities, who traced the files to Wong. Police were then informed and uncovered pornographic images of children on his computer, York magistrates heard yesterday.

Officers raided Wong’s home and took away his laptop and computer hard drive. When police computer experts examined the hard drive, they found 50 videos, all of which featured child pornography. Of the films, 25 were rated as Four on the Copine scale, which is used to decide the severity of child pornography.

The top two categories, levels four and five, are used for hardcore pornography. Martin Butterworth, for the Crown Prosecution Service, told magistrates: “You are looking at quite serious offences. We are talking about girls as young as six. “Of the movies, some of them are graphic, some of them have audio, some of them last more than an hour.”

Wong, of Janet Baker Close, Goodricke College, Deramore Lane, York, pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making a child pornography video between July 15, 2008, and March 19, 2010. All the charges related to the files found on his computer. Magistrates decided their maximum sentencing power of 12 months in prison was insufficient, and committed him instead to York Crown Court where he will be sentenced on December 13.

A University of York spokesman declined to comment until after the December court date. Mr Butterworth said students logging into the university’s intranet, which is not accessible by the general public, found the audio files. “This material was associated with the defendant,” said Mr Butterworth.

For Wong, Keith Haggerty said he had not shared his films with anyone and had no intention of doing so.
Mr Haggerty said: “He went to some lengths to try to make sure no one else saw them. It was entirely private.” The intranet can only be used by registered users with a password. It is different from the university’s general website, which is accessible by anyone.

Students shocked over arrest

Fellow students of Jonathan Wong, who was arrested after hardcore child pornography was found on his computer, said they were shocked over what he did and questioned why the campus security had not detected this earlier.

Said a student, who posted his comments on The Yorker news site on Wednesday: 'I lived with this guy in first year. Surely it would have been noticed if it was happening on campus, new Goodricke is big, but it's still only student accommodation. I'm deeply shocked by the whole thing. Really can't believe he could hide something like this.'

Added a posting from another student: 'Am genuinely shocked. He's an acquaintance and I would never have expected anything like this. Amazing what people can hide.'

A THIRD year history student of the University of York, said to be from Singapore, faces jail after he pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making a child pornography video, featuring girls as young as six over more than a year. Jonathan Wong, 23, of Goodricke College, was arrested after hardcore child pornography was found on his computer by fellow students, according to The Press of York, in UK. The audio files can be viewed via the university's internal network by registered users with a password.

When police were alerted, they found images and videos, some of which lasted over an hour long. About 50 videos were found, 25 of which were rated in some of the highest categories of hardcore pornography, said The Press report. Wong on Tuesday pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making child pornography between July 15, 2008 and March 19, 2009. Martin Butterworth, of the Crown Prosecution Service told magistrates that some of the girls featured in the videos looked as 'young as six'.

'Of the movies, some of them are graphic, some of them have audio, some of them last more than an hour,' he was quoted by The Press as saying. Magistrates said that the severity of the case meant Wong could not be sentenced at crown prosecution where the maximum sentence would only be 12 months. He will instead be sentenced at York Crown Court on Dec 13.

A SINGAPOREAN student on a teaching scholarship at the University of York in Britain has pleaded guilty to downloading indecent videos of children. Jonathan Wong, 23, who was once in the gifted education programme at Hwa Chong Institution, was caught after undergraduates became suspicious of files on the university's intranet and told the authorities, said The York Press newspaper.

The files were traced to him and police raided his home on the university's Heslington campus. They took away his laptop and hard drive, where they found 50 videos of hardcore child pornography, some of which were graphic, had audio, or lasted more than an hour.

They also featured girls as young as six, Mr Martin Butterworth, from the Crown Prosecution Service, told magistrates in York on Wednesday. He described the videos as 'quite serious offences'. Wong, said to have few friends at York, where he was studying history on a Ministry of Education (MOE) scholarship, pleaded guilty to 17 charges of downloading child pornography between July 15, 2008, and March 19 this year.

SINGAPORE: Child pornography videos, some featuring girls as young as six and some lasting longer than an hour, were found in the possession of a Ministry of Education (MOE) scholar studying in Britain.

Singaporean Jonathan Wong, a third-year history major at the University of York, pleaded guilty on Monday to 17 charges of owning child pornography videos since July 2008.

Twenty-three-year-old Wong could be facing more than a year in jail after the magistrate's court in York decided that its maximum sentencing power of 12 months in prison was insufficient and committed him instead to the York Crown Court where he will be sentenced on Dec 13, the city's The Press newspaper reported.

In reply to media queries, the ministry said it was looking into the matter and added it "will take the necessary disciplinary action against those (scholars) who have behaved inappropriately".

The Press said Wong's offences came to light after fellow students alerted the campus authorities about suspicious audio files being uploaded onto the university's intranet.

After tracing the files to Wong, the police confiscated his computer hard disk drive and found 50 videos - 25 of which were rated as "four" on the Copine scale.

On this scale used to rate the severity of child pornography, levels "four" and "five" constitute hardcore pornography.

The North Yorkshire police told MediaCorp on Thursday that Wong was arrested on March 19, adding that he did not produce the videos but downloaded some of them from the Internet.

According to The Press, UK prosecutor Martin Butterworth told the court: "We are talking about girls as young as six. Of the movies, some of them are graphic, some of them have audio, some of them last more than an hour."

Since the case surfaced in the local Chinese media and online, Singaporeans and those acquainted with Wong have berated him and expressed shock over his actions.

A Singaporean student at University of York, however, painted a different picture of him. Describing Wong as a "big brother", he told MediaCorp: "Jonathan is a nice, generous and helpful person ... He gave me medicine when I was sick and he cooked us meals."

The 22-year-old, who said he has known Wong for over a year, added: "He does not like loud parties but prefers a quiet peaceful dinner with friends ... I am disgusted by what he has done but I feel sorry for him too as a friend."

A spokesman for the University of York declined comment, saying it would respond to MediaCorp's queries only after court proceedings have been concluded.

An introvert, Jonathan Wong's perversion escaped everyone's attention.

Until fellow students at his university realised the Singapore Ministry of Education scholar had been downloading child pornography.

Now, besides a possible jail sentence, Wong, 23, may lose his scholarship.

Wong had downloaded the material in a student hall at the University of York where he is an undergraduate. He pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making a child pornography video between July 15, 2008, and March 19 this year.

Local Yorkshire newspaper, The Press, reported that Wong had built up his secret hoard of lengthy and "graphic" movies featuring girls as young as six over more than a year.

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has revoked the teaching scholarship of the University of York undergraduate Jonathan Wong who has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography in Britain.

In a statement, a spokesman said the Ministry will also tighten its processes so that schools must provide information on specific behavioural problems which may affect their selection as teachers.

Wong was awarded an overseas teaching scholarship in 2006.

As part of the selection process, the spokesman said the ministry reviewed his academic and CCA records, as well as testimonials from the Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Institution which he attended.

The spokesman said the teachers did not include in his testimonials the fact that he was publicly caned as a student in 2002 for peeping in a lady's toilet as they thought that he had overcome this errant behaviour after professional help.

The Ministry said it expects their teaching scholars to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds the standards of the teaching profession, and will take the necessary actions against those who have behaved inappropriately.

Wong, a third-year history undergraduate, was caught with 50 videos of child pornography on his computer hard disk after the police raided his room in March.

Of the films, 25 were rated as Four on the Copine scale, which is used to decide the severity of child pornography.

The top two categories, levels four and five, are used for hardcore pornography.

Wong, who is out on bail, will be sentenced by the York Crown Court on December 13 and faces imprisonment.

SINGAPORE: Thinking that the student had learnt from his mistake and had undergone counselling, teachers omitted his past peeping offence and public caning punishment from his testimonials.

Backed by these references, 23-year-old former Hwa Chong student Jonathan Wong was eventually awarded an overseas scholarship that would have led to him teaching at local schools for at least six years after graduation.

But there is no chance of that any longer.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Education (MOE) said it would revoke Wong's scholarship, which was awarded in 2006, following his guilty plea to possession of child pornography, charges which could land him in jail for possibly 10 years, MediaCorp has learnt.

Defending its "rigorous" scholarship selection process - which includes a screening against criminal records - a ministry spokesperson said Wong was selected after a review of his academic and co-curricular activity records along with testimonials from the Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Institution (HCI).

"The teachers did not include in his testimonials the fact that he was publicly caned as a student in 2002 for peeping in a ladies' toilet, as they thought he had overcome this errant behaviour after professional help," she said.

When contacted, a HCI spokesperson said that Wong was punished in Secondary 3 and responded well to professional counselling.

She said Wong "did well" subsequently and "did not behave inappropriately" in his remaining school years.

"His teachers thus thought he had learnt from his mistake.

The teachers' testimonials were based on their observation of Jonathan during his time under their charge," she added. As a result of this incident, however, the MOE will tighten its scholarship selection process.

Schools will now need to provide information on "specific behavioural problems" which may affect applicants' selection as teachers, said the ministry spokesperson.

The MOE's process already includes psychometric assessments, interviews and, where possible, teaching practice.

MediaCorp understands that Wong, for instance, did his teaching practice in July at a secondary school in the West.

On the issue of testimonials, other educators told MediaCorp they would not hide a student's past mistakes intentionally but would also ensure his or her future is not jeopardised.

Catholic High School principal Lee Hak Boon said: "It's about striking a balance that the student's future is not blemished but also not hiding previous offences that could threaten the nation's security and integrity."

Testimonials for the graduating cohort include their conduct in school and Mr Lee said teachers may choose to omit certain past misbehaviour if the student has repented.

At St Joseph's Institution, principal Koh Thiam Seng said, a student would not be given a testimonial for a scholarship application if the school finds that it is unable to give him a good one due to character flaws or a history of behaviour problems.

Public scholarship provider A*Star, which awards 40 to 50 undergraduate scholarships annually, said it has not encountered any instances where successful candidates covered up prior disciplinary or behavioural problems.

Wong, a third-year history major at the University of York, is now out on bail.

Ex-scholar's teachers 'thought he had learnt from his mistake'. MOE revokes his scholarship

By Bryna Sim
November 24, 2010

The Singapore scholarship holder caught in England with having child pornography was caned in school when he was 15 for peeping in a primary school girl's toilet.

So why wasn't Jonathan Wong's caning made known to the Ministry of Education (MOE), which awarded him the scholarship in 2006, four years after the peeping incident?

Responding to The New Paper's queries, the MOE spokesman said Wong’s teachers from secondary school and junior college "did not include" the caning incident in his testimonials because they "thought that Wong had overcome this errant behaviour after professional help".

MOE has since revoked the scholarship, and Wong, 23, has been informed.

SINGAPORE: Former Ministry of Education (MOE) scholar Jonathan Wong had already been arrested for possession of child pornography when he returned to teach in a secondary school here in Singapore.

23-year-old Wong, who is a history major at the University of York, was arrested in March and did his month-long teaching attachment in July at the school in the western part of Singapore.

Besides teaching history and literature, he interacted closely with pupils when working on a project with them, although "nothing was amiss and Wong acted normally like any other teacher", said a source who also taught at the school.

But, the MOE only knew of Wong's involvement in child pornography last month.

In reply to queries, a ministry spokesman said: "His offence only came to light after he was charged in court in November."

The spokesman added that "neither Jonathan Wong nor his university informed MOE that he had been arrested in March and was under police investigation when he returned for his school attachment".

University of York spokesman David Garner told Channel NewsAsia that it "was not informed by the police of Jonathan Wong's arrest nor the subsequent charges".

Mr Garner said: "The first that the university knew of the charges was when Jonathan Wong appeared before York Crown Court on Nov 15."

Parents whom Channel NewsAsia spoke to were concerned when they heard the news.

A teacher, who declined to be named, added: "When he was first arrested ... we should give him the benefit of the doubt. But he should not be allowed to teach till his case is concluded. There should be tightening of communication between the ministry and their scholars overseas."

This will now be done.

The MOE spokesman said: "We are reviewing our processes to improve the selection of scholars and the reporting of such offences."

Wong, who is on bail, will be sentenced during the week of Jan 17 after the initial court date of Dec 13 was postponed.

He could face up to 10 years in jail, though a non-custodial sentence is also possible, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

SINGAPOREAN PORN SCHOLAR JONATHAN WONG
No jail time for scholar

LONDON - JONATHAN Wong, the Singaporean undergraduate found with child pornography videos on his computer at the University of York, was on Monday given a suspended sentence for his offences.

A few hours later, the university said that it was expelling him. It is unclear, however, whether Wong, 23, will have to leave the country, as he could potentially lose his student visa.

At York Crown Court on Monday morning, Wong received a six-month sentence suspended for two years. It means that he will not spend any time in jail unless he re-offends during that period.

It is a typical sentence for this type of offence, according to Ms Elizabeth Ogborn, communications manager for the Crown Prosecution Service. The maximum would have been five years.

'He has also been given an eight-month supervision order, which means he has to work with the probation service to address his behaviour during that time,' she told The Straits Times.

In addition, Wong has to forfeit his computer and sign the sex offenders' register for seven years. This will make him known to police as a sex offender. He will also have to notify them if he changes his name or address, or spends more than a week away from home.
