Majority of Sinkies are pro death penalty, government hard stands on drug trafficking have make singapore a safer place as compare to many cities..the persistence of a minority group of pressuring cabinet to pardon Yong from the gallows with their romanticize campaign to save a drug trafficker has divert the core issue of maintain the law which were welcome by most of us. Should the cabinet give in and pardon Yong vui kong, will it affect their votes from the PAP supporters?

The death penalty has nothing to do with politics. PAP will neither gain nor lose. Oppositions will be foolish to align themselves with anti death penalty activists.

is about the social impact, it will open up to lots of question to our past, present and future convictions..the big picture we should concern is the fact that we live in a drug free and safe environment. The abolishment of death penalty in Mexico and some states of US have resulted more than 10000 life killed in related to drugs war, which is worst?

It's like asking whether foreign vandals be spared the cane would affect PAP votes. I don't think so, whether clemency is granted or not. It may be a coffeeshop or tabloid gossip topic, but not enough to affect votes.

it may not affect the votes in the coming elections, but it will have a impact if more drug traffickers are willing to risk making good money by importing more drugs and huge increase of drug addicts roam around at our neighborhood like the 60s &70s, sinkies will held PAP responsible for increasing crime and unstable sociality

Anyway, if you want to talk about this politically, by protesting and appealing clemency with politicisatiom, CSJ, GMS, KJ etc. are sending Yong on extra-express to the gallows with extra-strength noose awaiting. There's no way PAP would advise the President to grant clemency with opposition making noise and awaiting credit.

Yong would have hang last year if not the opposition politicize this event, instead of helping him they have prolong the agony to him and his family by giving them false hope..a law is a law, the family would probably move on if the execution was done according to the time table

If he was hanged last year, it would have been the end, case closed.

What makes you think an extra year of living is an agony to a condemned man

What do you propose then?, seeking clemency is not politics; for it is appealing to those who have the power in their hands, to show; mercy & compassion.

The accused deserve to be hang, full stop!, but all is appealing for compassion not to hang him, but to let him die a natural death. Hanging is unnatural death...

:p

You're right, plus queries and appeals from Malaysian side of course. They have to put a diplomatic show of "thorough" consideration. But still, law is law, and Malaysia has death penalty for drug traffickers too.

Many would wonder, what then is the circumstance justifying clemency? The law has two parts, motive and action. Satisfying both means breaking the law. In case of drug trafficking, the mandatory death penalty means the judge must mete out the death sentence. A circumstance under which clemency could be granted would be having to cast some shadows over the technicality of motive and action.

For example, a rich man enjoying his cocaine break got caught with quite a large amount on hand, under assumption of trafficking and mandatory death penalty. He hires a lawyer to present his case, he's so rich that he could buy cocaine factories in Myanmar if he wants. He's not trafficking, this is just for "recreation." It then falls under possession and consumption instead of trafficking, and he got off with a few months of good behaviour in DRC. If not, he stands a good chance of clemency.

if no death penalty, then maybe the scums should be made to consume their stash in 1 serving. if they survive, they go thru rehab & parole. if they get overdozed, too bad, so sad.

punitive for sure!

small amount, not worth the risk.
big amount, if caught, die by own sword.
