Chinese Delights in SA

South Africa offers up a wonderful mix of Asian delicatessens and speciality food stores. A widespread and largely colourful Chinese community means that traditional culinary treasures are always on the menu.

It's not difficult to find traditional Chinese produce and ingredients in Johannesburg. The areas of Cyrildene (new 'China Town') and around Commissioner Street ('Old China Town') boast many excellent Chinese shops, deli's and fast-food outlets.

At many of the Chinese delis you will also be able to buy authentic Thai and Japanese goods as well as traditional and non-traditional Chinese products. So, if you need fresh bamboo shoots, pork buns, endomame (soya beans), top quality rice wine or a decent wok, why not try out the following outlets:

Johannesburg's Killarney Mall is home to one of the best-stocked Chinese supermarkets in the country. Simply known as the 'Chinese Supermarket' this interesting shop boasts a wide selection of products including the best imported soy sauce in town. If you are looking for dried mushrooms, black beans, choice black vinegar and authentic green tea then visit Killarney Mall (in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg).

For a truly authentic food experience, one should visit Sui Hing Hong at 17 Commissioner Street in downtown Johannesburg. This area is known as 'Old Chinatown' and the selection of goods at this location are simply sublime. Here you can buy a wide selection of spices, sauces or deli items.

Why not throw in an imported wok and traditional red lantern into your shopping basket to round off the ultimate shopping experience?

'New Chinatown' or Cyrildene is of course another area of Johannesburg that is home to a large Chinese community. Here, one can find superb restaurants and Chinese eateries. A favourite place to buy foodstuffs is the Yat Kee Chinese Supermarket on Derrick Avenue. The range of goods is remarkable - and easy to find (the owners are very organized)! Here you can buy anything from real Szechuan spices to the best wasabi powder in town. Fresh greens are also a highlight, (as is the friendly customer service). Sister-establishment, the Yat Kee Chinese Supermarket and Trading can be found in Pretoria - a similar range of top quality goods are on offer from Monday through to Sunday.

The Dragon Chinese Supermarket in Rivonia is another hotspot for choice Asian ingredients. We're talking fresh ginger and garlic, delicious tofu and fresh chili…not to mention store-cupboard ingredients with attitude. Found in Rivonia Boulevard, (in an upmarket area of Johannesburg).

Pretoria's Yat Sang Chinese Supermarket in Faerie Glen has a combination of foods from Thailand, mainland China and even Japan. Fresh fruit and vegetables are on the menu and vast fridges offer up special delicacies such as crystal dumplings and delicious fresh crab.

Cape Town's Mainland China Food Market is another fantastic place to buy Asian fare. The range of goods is diverse and delicious - we're talking noodles, sake, dried squid, dumplings and Asian beverages that one can't seem to get anywhere else. Fresh produce can also be purchased here twice a week and the owners may even share a recipe or two with their favourite customers.

The Chaun Mei Chinese Deli can be found in Bloemfontein in the Free State. An array of excellent woks can be bought here as well as top-quality spices, noodles, condiments and excellent sushi ingredients. Fresh items are also available on request.

One must note that there are many excellent deli's in South Africa and whilst they may order a broad range of specialist goods from Italian to Kosher to Halaal - many will also boast a smattering of Asian products too.
Don't forget there is also a wide range of excellent Chinese restaurants to choose from all over South Africa. A few notables include The Red Chamber in Gauteng, the Tong Lok in Cape Town, the Ming Bow in Durban and the Zhong Hua in East London - all offer up authentic feasts with flair.

Five-city roadshow highlights tourist experiences of South Africa’s beauty, people and the
impressive preparations for World Cup 2010

This summer, the hottest summer event in China will be Nan Fei Mobile 2006. The interactive roadshow kicks off this August, starting in Beijing, showcasing the unique South African experiences in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu before proceeding to Hong Kong. The five-city roadshow will use the mobile billboard truck to drive around each city during weekdays and then park at the strategic venues for the weekend events, to offer three days immersion into the world of vivid imagery, cultural exhibitions, World Cup 2010 preview and provincial showcases along with fun activities and entertainment.

Nan Fei Mobile reinforces the many amazing tourism adventures found in South Africa, which were introduced during the Shanghai Nan Fei Total in 2005. The specially decorated Nan Fei Mobile truck will carry the essence of South Africa’s tourism experience so Chinese tourists can immerse in the famous cultural diversity, quality outdoor and wildlife experience, scenic beauty, and lifestyle, while enjoying the well-known hospitality of the South African people.

As enthusiasm for World Cup football continues even after the final match, anticipation and excitement around the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is already growing. As one of the most anticipated events in South Africa, the 2010 World Cup is the first World Cup tournament to take place in Africa and is expected to bring in at least 400,000 visitors to the country.

“If you want to know what we have planned for the 2010 World Cup, if you are anxious to dance vigorously with authentic tribal dancers, and if you want to win a free trip to South Africa then come join us when Nan Fei Mobile stops in your city,” declared Ms. Zolelwa Mukozho, Portfolio Manager for Asia and Australasia of South African Tourism. “This is going to be one of the most exciting and entertaining travel shows ever seen in China. The roadshow will allow the Chinese, who have limited knowledge of South Africa, to see what an awesome destination South Africa is. We are offering those who have thought about visiting South Africa the extra push to start planning for world class affordable luxury travel experience.”

Nan Fei Mobile will serve as a beacon for spreading South Africa’s friendliness and warm welcome to millions of eager Chinese travelers by focusing on Culture, Outdoor and Wildlife, Scenic Beauty and Lifestyle. At the roadshow, visitors can explore South African culture through heart pounding African drums and Zulu dance performances and authentic South African arts and crafts including beadwork and artistic Ndebele paintings. In the evening, a magnificent “South African Nights” will let visitors taste the unique cuisine of South Africa including wild, exotic game. “Nan Fei Mobile welcomes to the authentic combination of the great outdoors and Big 5 Country - buffaloes, elephants, lions, leopards and rhinoceroses. Within this exciting experience of true quality, you will be mesmerized by the exotic scenic beauty of South Africa including the world famous, spiritual Cape Point, meeting point of two oceans” enthuses Manqoba Nyembezi, Tourism Attaché (PRC and Hong Kong), South African Embassy Beijing. In addition, cutting edge South African fashion designers will present the young and dynamic South Africa’s Fashion Week 2006 so visitors can enjoy South Africa’s trendy and energetic lifestyle.

Nan Fei Mobile will have lots of interactive games and contests giving visitors to have the opportunity to win numerous prizes such as an all-expense paid trip to South Africa, bead-made handcrafts and live paintings. Meanwhile, South African Tourism ambassadors will be on-hand to answer in detail questions about the country’s full range of attractions.

“Following Germany’s successful World Cup tournament, it is now South Africa’s turn to offer a World Cup event that is beyond the ordinary, as President Mbeki promised,” said Mr. Manqoba Nyembezi. “We firmly believe that more and more Chinese people will pay increasing attention to South Africa not only for the 2010 World Cup, but also due to the country’s rich cultural heritage, amazing outdoors and wildlife adventures and abundant natural resources that include our fantastic people. Nan Fei Mobile is a great chance for South African Tourism to show the Chinese public the country’s uniqueness as a travel destination.”

Hmmm. Interesting but I was told that the crime rate there is very high and the police there are simply unreliable so you've got to pay to hire your own guards. Many SAfricans migrate to places like UK and Australia mainly because of the high crime rate there.

AIDS also very high.

Previous nationwide strike crippled the economy while all workers were dancing away in the streets...Not enough food on the table but still got time to strike. No sense of priority.
