SINGAPORE - In recognition of the good performance and hard work put in by its employees, media company MediaCorp has approved a special one-off bonus for its staff.
This amounts to half of the salary deductions taken by staff during the mandatory days off without pay scheme last year.
The cost-cutting measure helped the company weather the economic storm and avoided any retrenchment of its 2,600 employees.
Last January, as media companies worldwide were axing shows, publications salaries, bonuses and even staff, MediaCorp announced its staff would work a shorter four-day week, to alternate with the regular five-day work week.
Chief executive Lucas Chow thanked MediaCorp employees' "commitment, belief and rallying behind the company", they managed to turn things around.
He said: "MediaCorp turned in an extremely good performance against the bleakest of economic conditions globally."
Mr Chow also announced another piece of good news on Friday - a larger pie of its revenue has been set aside for the variable bonus and will be paid to all eligible employees next month.
Having done what was seemingly "impossible" last year, Mr Chow urged Media-Corp staff to do even better this year.
He said: "I encourage all of you to continually give of your best to the company and to future proof MediaCorp. I look forward to addressing all of you again next June for more good news and better results."
