The drainage system at this walkway in Bishan is so bad that the entire pathway is flooded with muddy waters every time it rains, says STOMPer PS KAMANAT.

This not only inconveniences residents, it also puts the elderly and young children at risk.

There is a serious need for drains to be built into the side of the walkways to alleviate this problem, he says.

In an email, the STOMPer, who is also a resident, says:

"Whenever there is a heavy rain, which is common to tropical Singapore, the beautifully paved walkways of Blocks 146, 147 and 149 at Bishan Green (Street 11) leading to the bus stops at Braddell Road turn to temporary storm-water drains with gushing waters.

"Many times, either sides of the walkways remain wet and slippery even though there is no rain. This is due to constant seepage of water from the raised grounds on either sides.

"This is due to a simple overlooking from the part of architects. There is a defect existing in the design of the recessed walkways which is carefully built to enhance the beauty of the lawn there.

"The attempt to beautify our neighbourhood is laudable but care shall be taken to avoid safety lapses.

"During rain, senior citizens and children find it extremely difficult to reach the bus stops wading across the gushing water. Many times, we get heavy downpour during evening when most of the children are returning from schools.

"Apart from the danger these waters pose, these walkways have the hazards from slippery floor on days without rain due to water seepage.

"The remedy is to create drains on either sides of the walkways.

"As the construction related to the lift upgrading project in this area is still not completed despite repeated delays and stoppage of works, the authorities should consider rectifying this danger now itself before the contractors are demobilised.

"Today’s rain brought in plenty of loose m&d to the rain water to the walkways from the construction site as work was going on at the time of rain".

Wow, time sure flies.

didn't know I am 100 years old already. Thought it was opnly a couple of months ago only.

Life sure is short if you are not earning millions in salary in a job that has no accountability.

The whole of Singapore is vulnerable to flood because of unending construction everywhere in the island. The populations are increasing and space are getting smaller by building more concrete walls around us. Do they need to have surrounding amenities knocked down several times and rebuild repeatedly like Town Councils have so much cash to splurge. Why not give back the money to society to help the poor and not wasting our precious resouces building cold walls resulting in rat holes everywhere.
