RATCHAPRASONG, MAY 3, 2010: After two days of apologizing over the inspection of Chulalongkorn Hospital by red-shirt protesters, United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) core leader Jatuporn Prompan today fired a broadside at the Thailand government and hospital director Adisorn Patradul.

Mr. Jatuporn said that since the inspection of the hospital by a handful of red-shirt guards led by Payap Panket had become public there had been numerous people come forward, Thai’s and foreigners, to verify that Thai troops had not only been in the hospital, but had also shot at red-shirt protesters.

“Online forums around the world now have numerous reports from eyewitnesses to last Saturday’s events, including photographs of soldiers in the grounds of Chulalongkorn Hospital wearing the hospitals distinctive pink slippers.

“These reports by independent people, along with the photographs that have now been posted online around the world, show that:

• “Chulalongkorn Hospital has not remained independent and neutral as it claims

• “the evacuation of patients by the hospital was nothing more than a publicity stunt orchestrated by a desperate government to discredit the peaceful red-shirts protest

• “the red-shirt protesters actions was in direct response to the government breaching international conventions and placing troops inside the hospital

• “hospital director Adisorn Patradul has not been open and truthful about the presence of armed troops in his hospital

• “the continued demands by hospital director Adisorn Patradul for red-shirt protesters to clear Rajadmiri Road and Lumpini Park of protesters back to Sarasin Rd. is nothing more than politicizing the situation of the sick, frail and elderly who cannot afford treatment at private hospitals used by the Bangkok elite.

“Since our protest has started it has followed a peaceful path. Red-shirt protesters asked to inspect the hospital after they were fired upon by Thai troops who were not only in the hospital grounds, but also in hospital buildings that had already been cleared of patients.

“Instead of concentrating on providing state-owned medical care to the poor, the sick and the elderly, Adisorn Patradul has engaged in a political campaign to smear the reputation of red-shirt protesters locally and internationally.

“In showing our willingness to facilitate the operation of the hospital protesters have moved their barricade to provide free and unhindered access to the hospital entrance. Despite this Adisorn Patradul continues to demand more.

“While we regret any feeling of intimidation patients or staff may have felt, the proof is now available for the world to see that this government and the administrators of this hospital have not been truthful in their explanation or description of events leading up to Payap Panket asking to inspect the hospital last Saturday.

“Lets not forget that in 2008 Chulalongkorn Hospital was the first hospital in Thailand to say that it would not treat police injured in the dispersal of People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters illegally occupying Parliament House.

“The comments made at the time by Dr Suthep Koncharnwit and which were widely reported and remain a matter of public record were: ‘Today, the medical <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background-color: transparent; background-image: none; background-repeat: repeat; background-attachment: scroll; background-position: 0% 50%; -moz-background-size: auto auto; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_1" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_1')" leohighlights_keywords="team" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dteam%26domain%3Dwww.singsupplies.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dteam%26domain%3Dwww.singsupplies.com" leohighlights_underline="true">team</leo_highlight> of Chulalongkorn Hospital will not give assistance to police officers injured from the clashes with PAD supporters. This is a social measure to show that doctors and nurses condemn the violent actions’”.

“In 2008 Doctor Suthep Kolcharnwit said ‘the boycott of police was a measure to denounce <leo_highlight style="border-bottom: 2px solid rgb(255, 255, 150); background-color: transparent; background-image: none; background-repeat: repeat; background-attachment: scroll; background-position: 0% 50%; -moz-background-size: auto auto; cursor: pointer; display: inline; -moz-background-clip: -moz-initial; -moz-background-origin: -moz-initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: -moz-initial;" id="leoHighlights_Underline_2" onclick="leoHighlightsHandleClick('leoHighlights_Underline_2')" onmouseover="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOver('leoHighlights_Underline_2')" onmouseout="leoHighlightsHandleMouseOut('leoHighlights_Underline_2')" leohighlights_keywords="the%20police" leohighlights_url_top="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsTop.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520police%26domain%3Dwww.singsupplies.com" leohighlights_url_bottom="http%3A//shortcuts.thebrowserhighlighter.com/leonardo/plugin/highlights/3_1/tbh_highlightsBottom.jsp?keywords%3Dthe%2520police%26domain%3Dwww.singsupplies.com" leohighlights_underline="true">the police</leo_highlight>’s use of excessive violence against the protesters and that Chulalongkorn doctors would seek cooperation from doctors of other hospitals to boycott police as well’”.

Mr Jatuporn called on the administrators and staff of Chulalongkorn Hospital to stop meddling in politics and to reopen the hospital and deliver full medical services for the poor, elderly and sick members o society who are unable to afford medical services at the elite-owned and run private hospitals throughout Bangkok.

The proof of the governments illegal actions are now online around the world for everyone to see. The government might try and block websites and external media from being seen by Thai people, but internationally the world is now seeing that it was the government and not the red-shirts who broke international conventions”, he said.
