<!-- story content : start --> MEMBERS from two rival factions of the opposition Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) were charged in court on Thursday with rioting over last September's brawl infront of Changi Road building. The two groups appeared separately within 21/2 hours of each other in a district court. The first seven are: vice president Ali Asjadi, 53, Nazrudy Nasrul, 27, Azhar Ali, 44, PKMS secretary-general Malik Ismail, 40, Mazlan Soep, 33, vice president I Ismail Mohamed Yaacob, 44, and Abdul Hamid Ahmad, 59. All are alleged to have been part of the group to cause hurt to five men from a breakaway group.

Abdul Hamid, a caretaker of PKMS Building, is accused of being armed with a chisel at 12.18pm last Sept 3 (09). The breakaway group - Hasan Nordin, 65, Mohamad Yusof Jaafar, 43, Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Said, 68, Ramli Mohamad and his twin Ramlan, 49 - are alleged to have caused hurt to Ali, Azhar, Mazlan and Abdul Hamid while being members of an unlawful assembly on Sept 3 (09). Abdul Hamid, who is out on $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a chisel during the rioting.

Mohamed Salleh, also offered $15,000 bail, is alleged to have been armed with a wooden mallet at the time. Mr Subhas Anandan is acting for the seven while the other five are represented by Mr Tan Cheng Kiong. Pre-trial conference dates have been set for April 12 and 19 for the two respective groups. If convicted, Hamid and Salleh face a jail term of up 10 years, while the rest each faces a jail term of up to seven years and caning.

PKMS brawl - 4 fined

By Elena Chong

FOUR ousted members of the PKMS (Singapore Malay National Organisation) were each fined $1,000 on Thursday for affray. Hasan Nordin, 66, Mohamad Yusof Jaafar, 54, Ramli Mohamad and his twin brother Ramlan, 50, who were originally accused of rioting, admitted to an amended charge of disturbing the public peace by fighting with seven members of the rival faction.

The offence took place at 12.18pm in front of the PKMS Building at Changi Road on Sept 3 last year. Ramli, a former honorary secretary, had lodged a police report the night before that there would be a 'taking over process' of the PKMS by the previous office-bearers the next day.

The court heard that he did so to have a smooth handing over as he was concerned for the safety of the incoming office bearers and the tenants of the building due to previous incidents. Deputy Public Prosecutor Leong Wing Tuck said the other group heard about the taking over of the building and gathered at PKMS Building that day to forestall Ramli's faction from taking over. The other group's case will be mentioned in court on Friday afternoon.

Second PKMS group fined

By Elena Chong

SIX more men from PKMS were convicted on Friday of fighting with five men from the breakaway group infront of the PKMS Building last September. Ali Asjadi, 54, now president of PKMS, Nazrudy Nasrul, 28, Azhar Ali, 45, Malik Ismail, 40, Mazlan Soep, 34, and Ismail Mohamed Yaacob, 45, vice president 1, were each fined $1,000 for affray. Nazrudy, Azhar and Mazlan are from the Supreme Council while former secretary-general Malik is a member.

They admitted disturbing the public peace by fighting with Ramlan Mohamad, 50, Hasan Nordin, 66, Mohamad Yusof Jaafar, 54, Ramli Mohamad, 50, and Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Said, 69, at 12.18pm on Sept 3 last year. All except Mohamed Salleh have been fined. His case, together with 60-year-old caretaker Abdul Hamid Ahmad's, is pending.

The court heard that the street brawl broke out when the ousted members comprising twins Ramli and Ramlan, Hasan, and Mohamad Yusof wanted to take over the administration of the PKMS that day.
To ensure that everything would go on smoothly, Ramli, who was head of information and deputy secretary general, made a police report the previous night. He was concerned about safety and the peace of the tenants of the building due to a series of previous incidents. Each of them could have been jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $5,000.

PKMS caretaker jailed for attack

By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent

A CARETAKER of the PKMS building was jailed for six months on Tuesday for attacking a former Supreme Council member with a chisel. Abdul Hamid Ahmad, 60, who was originally charged with rioting, admitted to an amended charge of hurting Mr Ramlan Mohamed, 50, with the weapon infront of the building along Changi Road on Sept 3 last year.

He is the 11th person to be convicted over the fracas involving two rival factions of the Singapore Malay National Organisation. All 10 were each been fined $1,000 for the lunch-time fight. A 12th person, Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Said, 69, from Mr Ramlan's group, is expected to go on trial next month for rioting.

The court heard that Mr Ramlan's twin, Mr Ramli, a former deputy secretary-general of the party, had told police the night before that his faction was planning a takeover. He did so because he was concerned about safety due to previous incidents. Mr Ramli also met members of his faction to brief them about the planned takeover.

THE last offender involved in the street brawl between factions of PKMS, or the Singapore Malay National Organisation, outside the party headquarters in Changi Road in September 2009, was jailed a year on Wednesday.

Mohamed Salleh Mohamed Said, 69, a businessman, was convicted after a three-day trial on Tuesday, for fracturing the arm of a rival with a mallet. During the hearing that started in November, the businessman claimed he did not hit anyone with the mallet he was carrying.

He had merely been waving it about to scare his rivals off. But prosecution witnesses testified that they had seen him using the mallet on 45-year-old Azhar Ali.

Pleading for leniency on Wednesday, Mohamed Salleh - who did not have a lawyer - insisted he was innocent and had been framed by the police officer investigating the case. He claimed that the officer was in cahoots with the other faction.

Mohamed Salleh is the second brawler to be jailed. In October, Abdul Hamid Ahmad, 60, the caretaker of the PKMS building, was jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to injuring Ramlan Mohamad, 50, in the head with a chisel.

The fight broke out after a faction led by Ramlan tried to take over the administration of PKMS, in September 2009. This followed their expulsion after they complained about alleged financial improprieties by senior party members.

Ten other men, including Azhar, Ramlan and Ramli, have been fined $1,000 each for fighting over the incident.

Man gets additional 6 months' jail for contraband cigarette activities

Posted: 24 July 2012 1646 hrs

SINGAPORE: A man has been sentenced to an additional six months' jail for his involvement in contraband cigarette activities at the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) Building.

Indonesian Atlis Suryanto, 41, admitted to transporting S$80,000 from Singapore to Batam, Indonesia, where he passed the money to a person called "Indra" on three occasions between July and September 2011.

In the sentencing on Tuesday, the court was told that there were three shipments of the contraband.

On each occasion, Suryanto would come to Singapore before the shipment arrived to collect advance payment and take cigarette orders from a Singaporean known as "Ali Asjadi" at the PKMS Building.

The money collected would then be passed on to "Indra" in Batam.

On the day of the shipment, Suryanto would return to Singapore to help with the loading, unloading and transportation.

For his effort, he would be paid S$150 by "Ali" and 5 million Indonesia Rupiah (more than S$600) by "Indra" for each shipment.

Suryanto was found to have removed the illegal gains from Singapore's jurisdiction after the authorities received information in late September 2011.

Suryanto is currently serving a 15-month jail term.

He and three others were caught last September with contraband cigarettes at PKMS Building by Singapore Customs officers. More than 2,400 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized.
