    Ex-gangster beaten to death

    By Tessa Wong

IT WAS meant to be a supper outing, but it ended with a man gruesomely bludgeoned to death by gangsters, and his wife slashed as she tried to stop the attackers. Former gang member Lim Eng Soon, known as Black Panther in gangster circles, subsequently died of his injuries on Monday afternoon, almost 12 hours after the vicious attack. His wife, who wanted to be known only as Madam Lim, sustained cuts to her arm and chest. The 46-year-old declined to give their occupations, but it is believed Mr Lim was a cleaner.

She said that on Sunday night, her husband, who is in his late thirties, headed out to meet a 'brother' - understood to be an old gang friend - near Block 144, Teck Whye Lane near Choa Chu Kang. Madam Lim said his friend wanted to see him about an important matter. She joined her husband and his friend some time past 11pm, and the three decided to have supper at a nearby coffee shop. But while they were walking to the coffee shop, a man suddenly appeared from behind, and began hitting the friend with an umbrella.

Cannot say that way bro... If Bro Eng Soon was lucky enough to be educated he probably would not have to resort to becoming a gangster...

My condolence to the family ....

this looks like a planned attack and motive to commit hurt esp with deadly weapons used. Not likely to be in a spur of moment and the deceased may had previously got into some engagements with the assailants. The assailants even hurt the wife who tried to stop the fight. Chances are that they will face heavier punishments for their violent conducts although murder will likely not to stand

Man gets jail and caning for rioting

    By Elena Chong

A MAN originally accused of murdering a cleaner at Teck Whye Lane was sentenced to 40 months' jail and six strokes of the cane for rioting on Tuesday.

Gunesh Kumar Loganathan, 25, pleaded guilty last week to being with Augustine William, Sathya, Narendran Ravindran and another in the illegal assembly to cause hurt to Mr Lim Eng Soon.

Mr Lim, 38, alias Orh Pa or Black Panther, died 12 hours after the attack by two of the members with a metal rod and a metal pipe.

Gunesh is the first in the group to be dealt with. Augustine, 22, is expected to plead guilty to a similar charge on Feb 17 while Sathya, 23, and Narendran, 28, are facing trial in the High Court for the alleged murder.

The prosecution had sought more than three years' jail and caning for Gunesh citing, among other aggravating factors, the fact that the offence took place in the heart of a public housing estate affecting the public's sense of safety and security.

Furthermore, there was a high level of violence, resulting in death. Gunesh had been convicted of being a member of an unlawful assembly before.

But defence counsel Shashi Nathan said his client's role was the most peripheral among all. Gunesh, who had been drinking a large amount of alcohol, merely kicked Mr Lim's wife who had threatened him with a knife, he added.
