1,000 Singaporeans give up citizenship each year

Approximately 1,000 Singaporeans give up their citizenship every year - and this is only based on data that’s derived from Singaporeans who denounced their citizenship and left Singapore is the past 3 years. I am not sure of their decision to give up the citizenship, but I suspect that it’s got something to do with Singapore’s stance on dual citizenship.

The country does not allow dual citizenship and Singaporeans who want to take up a second citizenship is supposedly forced to make a decision to give up one of the citizenship. Needless to say, if the Singaporean goes through all the effort to get the second citizenship, guess what he’ll choose? =) Nonetheless, it’s been rumoured that such declarations had been relaxed recently and there’s just a slight chance that the government might contemplate to allow for dual citizenship - although it’s something that won’t come in my life time.

With all the hearsay going around, perhaps it’s a good time to straighten out some… "facts". Apparently, if you decide to give up your citizenship, you’d be given some time to consider it. If you are bent on giving it up, then you’d be able to withdraw your CPF in full within 2 weeks. For male Singaporeans, I am not sure how things go, but I presume that it spells the end of the 10-year reservist cycle.

Anyone gone through such a process? =)

1,000 S’poreans give up citizenship each year

AN AVERAGE of about 1,000 Singapore gave up their citizenship each year in the last three years, said Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng on Monday.

The reasons they renounced their Singapore citizenship ranged from marriage to foreigners to yearning for a different environment, he said in his written reply to a question from from Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim, who wanted to know how many Singaporeans had emigrated in the last three years.

Most of them took up new citizenship in countries in Southeast-Asia, the United States of America and Australia.

Mr Wong said Singaporeans who emigrate generally do not declare this to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) when they leave.

The only available data which gives an indication of the number of emigrants from Singapore is the number of Singaporeans who have given up their citizenship and left Singapore.

do you know, how many of those getting PR or citizenship in other countries, return here to work and also for good.

sometimes, when you are looking at people of other countries from here,it can be very misleading. even though they may enjoy better openness and freedom but they are paying higher taxes to take care of older and unemploy people.

freedom of speech and press, come at a price, you will see a lot of people sue each other.

just my thought as i used to travel quite often during my younger's days.

Don't mind pay higher tax and got social security in old age.

Here we are forced to set aside every month CPF funds for govt to abuse.

No freedom to protest !!!

Which is better ???

The taxes over there are mostly obvious and above board. And to compensate for it, income is usually higher as well. Starting pay for most professional jobs are on the high side of $3,000 p/m in Australia, and there are not many hidden taxes or charges if you're earning the average level of wages.

And if you're a person who likes to save some money, there's always retirement savings with high interest(7% to 8%) in Australian banks that can collect good money. And they're secured thanks to the A$700b guarantee by the Rudd government.

In contrast though, while income taxes are low, there are many, many hidden charges for everyone regardless of wage levels. Bank interest given out by local banks are abysmal as well. And CPF has become a form of a tax because money going in there will never see your face, and will never be enough for retirement because of increase of costs in getting a HDB flat and in medical bills.

The grass on the other side will be greener once you have truly stayed in another country and have experienced a bit of the life there. When you realise that Singapore is not a dream, but an illusion, you realise there's more to life than being on this 600 sq km island.

are you aware the bank in australia requires you to have a 104,000 per year income to buy the median 400k house in australia? are you aware of the very high taxes, food costs?

australia is the worst country in the world. singaporeans have many choices available to them - just ask the australians who are fleeing australia why they are leaving.

You dont mind paying high taxes to ensure sociaal security, but the MNC who are investing here are trying to escape the high social security taxes in their home countries.

If things are SO GOOD in Singapore compared with Australia, then shouldn't MORE Aussies be rushing to give up their aussie citizenship to take up SG citizenship:confused:

Reason : Aussies view Singapore as an Asian nation with predominantly Asian values and culture.

Also, they can get hanged for drugs here unlike in Australia which is very liberal in drugs!!

So the Aussies can happily stay where you are and happily take your drugs !!

Please don't dirty our shores !!

1. There is NO such thing as ASIAN values or culture in Singapore. The need for a law to force children to look after their aged parents is MOST TELLING about the myth of the so called 'ASIAN VALUES'.

2. The STD rates, teen abortion rates and high prevalence loss of virginity amongst the ASIAN teens again highlights yet another ASIAN VALUE myth busted.

3. Drug takers are not the kind of people who actually qualify to emigrate be it from Aussie or any other country.

Sylvia Lim looks like she's doing her job.

That's the advantage of being in Parliament - ministers have to answer all the questions by MPs. Few realise that.

To avoid that, ministers can be evasive or get their PAP backbenchers to "book" the time and ask the more "harmless" questions. However, some veteran PAP MPs become less "courteous" especially with forced-retirement pending - such as Tan Soo Khoon, who openly lambasted government offices and GST increase.

This has become one of the landmark admissions by the inept Wong Kan Seng, thanks to Sylvia Lim. The other was when Steve Chia asked about the "White Horse" issue which got Cedric Foo fumbling.

aussies have the "biggest of anything and everything" south of the equator (most of the real world is up north) therefore that affects greatly on their over inflated ego.

factually, they have land (which belonged to the aborigines) so it does not make sense to emigrate to a concrete jungle like singapore. however, many are working here in singapore (where the money and opportunities are) and returning to the expanse of land back in ausland.

their egos will never allow them to be a 2nd class citizen to an asian nation. the hardworking asians in ausland being discriminated against will attest to this.

of course the worst hit are the aborigines who had had their land taken from them and then suffered the worst form of discrimination. speaking of laws, there is a strict one which protects the aboriginals from the rest of the population. doesnt take a genius to figure out why they have this law.

btw, weren't the first australians comprised of convicts banished from england?

More than 1 milion sinkees earn less than 1k. The high taxes in OZ is nothing compared than the low wages in peesai to these people.

France and Germany will still invest regardless of high wages and tax because asian are suckers for their products.

Is there any asian cuntry up to challenge them in their ingenuity of their products??

Pappies only prostitutes sinkees into working slave wages for these companies and at the same time buying their shit.

Therefore I deduce that sinkees are taking it up in their asses and swallowing their cum at the same time.

Pappies are the biggest pimps in the world.

Coles sell cheap groceries though: take it as a challenge to cook your own dinner instead.

Racial discrimination? Don't give them ammo; avoid situations that might descend into fights in the first place. Fight against racial discrimination as a group in civil action.

Drugs abundance? Simple. Don't take drugs, and make friends who don't take drugs and avoid places where drugs are mostly consumed, such as in night clubs that are being watched by police outside every saturday, and friday.
