I recently had a gathering and causally spoken about migration to a good friend's wife who is a Japanese. Be it to US or Canada or Australia....but indeed when I look around there are not many Japanese immigrant in most part of the world. She has 2 kids and is living in Singapore for the past 6 years. Eventually, she said she will still return to Japan for good.

She shared that in Japan 99% of people have no such intention and hardly mention or discuss such topic. She could not really tell me the exact reason as the reasons are multi-factorial which include the lifestyle, culture, housing, job and medical. I was surprised to learn that their house mortgages are on very low interest and government will support them on the mortgages if they are jobless or other valid reason if they cannot pay....some even supported for several years like her uncle who is still officially not working after jobless for 6 years...doing part time...who can take his time to pay or even pass on to his next generation to continue to pay.......

Am not sure how it work and I may be missing something here, but their policies seem to be not easy to understand by most or known to outsider for that matter... Anyone know more or care to share your thought....

There are large japanese migrant population in Latin America especially Brazil, Peru and Argentina who went there before the war. The new migrants go to US, UK, OZ and NZ. NZ I think has the largest.

After the Japanese ballon burst, their interest rate hovers just about 1%. Its is in long recession.

The Japanese have a comprehensive welfare system but the profile is low and they do not like foreigners to be aware of it for cultural reasons. One does not have to be humiliated like the Singapore system.

The Japanese migrants are a quiet group of close-knit, you do see them in Perth. Just look at the Perth's Japanese magazine.

I think you are wrong, there's a lot of Japanese migrate to the west. Of course, being Japanese, they would not settle for anything less. Those Japanese in Singapore are mainly expats, or wife of expats, they WILL NEVER NEVER migrate to Singapore for good. US is usually their top desintation, many would migrate to Canada, Uk, Europe, Australia and NZ. They just absolutely love the western lifestyle and admire living with the blue eye white people. Japanese may or may not go back to Japan for retirement. However, they have very strong culture and roots with Japan;and are extremely proud of their heritage.

I know a couple of Japanese here in Sydney, they migrated here to seek a more relaxed and balanced lifestyles. Many of them(especially the single ladies) either come over here to learn English or holidays. After staying a while, they began to like the place so much that they apply for PR and stayback for good. Some ended up married locals here and start a family. Many of them finding it hard to cope with the fast pace life of Tokyo after experienced the slower pace of life in the west. In japan, 'sexism' still exist in the workplace thus makes it difficult for women getting a job after they reach a certain age. Yes, the Japanese government do provide a good welfare system for their citizens for retirement. this is their culture to take care of their own people/race. However, they work very very hard in their entire life working.

In Sydney, you can find the Japanese community living in the Northbridge, Neutral Bay, Crows Nest and Land Cove suburbs. They do not have a big migration population as compare with the Koreans, mainland chinese or indians. These are the upper class suburbs, but they actually are big spenders, they usually share accomodation with their fellow Japanese, and look after each others well being.

There are specialised Japanese stores in the city , and a kinonikuya bookstore here with a wide range of Japanese catalogue cater for the Japanese. ( I heard there's a also a Japanese style hot spring at the Blue Mountains)

I'm quite surprise and I agree with you totally. I reckon the number of Japanese men who already have a small family in Japan migrating, will be very low. Granted for those who are single or especially Japanese female who had studied overseas.

Other then married Japanese men, there's many Japanese single men living in Tokyo but migrating is not a priority for them as they are very indulge in their work and career, they hardly have a rest day! Althought Tokyo is a expensive city, most of them still can make a decent living (high wages), and its a very comfortable place to retire as they can always move to the countryside.

Japan is actually a good place to live and retire, something cannot replicate easily in another country. Even if the Japanese emigrate elsewhere, they would not badmouth their own country, they know there's flaws with the social system, but hey, Japanese is Japanese..they are a peaceful community when living oversea, and they stay low profile.

Granted for those who are single or especially Japanese female who had studied overseas.

Some chio Japanese females studying in Western countries are part-time FLs to help pay their tuition, accommodation, & other expenses. It's illegal & against immigration law for overseas students to work as FLs but they are doing it very discreetly.
