<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->Antony Lee, the Singapore Table Tennis Association team manager whose future was in question for most of the week, came close to quitting last year.
But he stayed on as he wanted to help Singapore win its first Olympic medal since 1960.
Ng Ser Miang, chairman of Project 0812, which is aimed at helping athletes win medals in the Beijing and London Olympics, revealed this at yesterday's Olympic celebration and autograph session.
'He was thinking of quitting,' said Ng. 'But, like a man, he hung on.'
This, despite the arrival of his baby girl, and a job offer from the Ministry of Education, added Ng.
'Antony has a difficult and unenviable job. He has stepped on many toes, but he didn't choose to be popular,' said Ng, who is also chairman of NTUC FairPrice Co-operative.
In an earlier interview Lee, 38, had said that one of the biggest sacrifices he had to make as team manager was family time.
His job requires him to travel with the national table tennis team frequently. Because of his long absence from home, his five-month-old daughter does not even recognise him.
When Lee returned from the team's training camp in Osaka last month, she cried when he held her.
While the national women's table tennis team, their coach Liu Guodong, 1960 Olympic silver medallist Tan Howe Liang and other officials received gift hampers as a form of appreciation from FairPrice, Lee got seven tins of Anlene milk powder.
'I hope that your baby now smiles when she sees you,' quipped Ng.
