Hey Frens,

Just listened to some Sam Hui songs…and I really feel it reflects on todays Singapore..after hearing them it really makes me proud to be a Cantonese,,,no wonder Old Fart hates dialects particular cantonese.. this is a Sam Hui song, and he has sang many other songs which on Singapore/Hong Kong life..but unfortunately for Singapore,,its particularly valid today,,,and these are 70s songs....these are for u all to to ponder..from Sam Hui..

賣身契 (the Average life cycle-but also the BLOOD contract forced to signed with Gahmen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGMX_yiBsts

齊齊唱首 (sounds like singapore public transport right?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdgmef7kyCc&feature=related

加價熱潮 (Infllation-Gahmen led of course)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS9mHHjh_B4&feature=related

半斤八兩 (Working conditions and basically working for a living...with low wages and lack of job security...its SERF conditions)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7-R1iM0Hv4&feature=related

錢錢錢錢 -No money, No talk-(PAP attitudes to its people…look at the average Singaporean’s life)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzUSrzAOsKc

And please note, these are 70's songs reflecting life in Hong Kong, but more relavent for today's Singapore...so effectively Singapore has gone backwards with regards to its economy, standard or living and Quality of life,,,,

I don't understand any Cantonese so sadly no matter how nice the song, I wouldn't enjoy it like a Mandarin or Hokkien song.

My all time favourite! Strange that I was browsing some old Sam Hui CD in a shop yesterday, and the shop worker was playing this song also, and today you post his songs. Listen closely, the tune is actually very catchy also, one of those evergreen that will keep you tapping your toes for a long time.

And this is what we should do, 爱拼才会赢 (Ai Piah Cia Eh Yia), 拼拼拼拼拼!

u mean this song??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5JlQ-fCXDg

good song too,,,,,

"Sap Kor lu ja".....Ten Girls or Women, you can see plenty of these when you travel the trains.... Auntie type who are in theri 50's or 60's..dresses up like 20's...

Sam another song almost on the same vein, would be "Tsimsha jo SUZIE"...a lovely tune & lyrics..

Sam Hui was famous for his social commentary in his song...one of my all time favourite was two songs in his commentary about Hong Kong 1997...

When he sang about being , 'second class citizen in another country"...

but uniquely SINgapore is that, we the citizens if SINgapore are SECOND CLASS citizens in our own country, without even having to migrate, thank in part to the 66.6%.

in the 80's when i listened to sam hui songs, i just laughed & did not see how they were relevant to singapore - he sang abt the lack of money, the plight of office workers, naive folks who got cheated etc - things that didnt happen in s'pore ... yet ... :o

but i know that was HK society pre-1997 - full of unmotivated unhappy ppl living in overcrowded conditions who were all dying to migrate outta HK ... :o

now - s'pore has degenerated to become like HK pre-1997 ... full of unhappy dissatisfied ppl who don't have enuff money ...

what has become of the role of s'pore govt ? it is this - the govt intervenes when it wants to exert control to keep power - eg. strict protest laws ... but are hands-off when it finds itself 'losing power' - eg. helping the aged, needy & sick ... :(

incidentally - when ppl in a society are unhappy - they produce the best comedies  ... some of the funniest shows in HK cinema were produced during this period - they were slapstick coupled with dark cynical jokes ... hui brothers, stephen chow, even chow yuan fatt & alan tam could be very comical ...

these days what is HK cinema ? arty-farty mainland type shows ... even karena lam & ekin cheng start acting in arthouse movies like 'claustrophobia' ...

and mediacorp ? full of dark cynical humor from mark lee, kym ng, jack neo ... a reflection of the times - that s'pore is now like HK pre-1997 & thats a bad sign ... :o

Please don't quote irrelevant songs in archaic dialects we don't understand.
