SINGAPORE: A Malaysian motorcyclist and his pillion rider were injured after gusty, wet weather early Wednesday morning (Aug 3) caused two canopies at Tuas Checkpoint to collapse.

Both were taken to the Ng Teng Fong Hospital, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement.

The incident occurred at about 5.35am, following strong winds and a heavy thunderstorm. No drivers from the car zone were injured, ICA added.

The statement, issued at 9.57am, also said the fallen structures are being cleared and that the traffic situation at the checkpoint was returning to normal. For safety reasons, arriving cars and motorcycles are being diverted to other zones for clearance, ICA added.

“Motorists are advised to cooperate with officers on site. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority will ensure that safety and border security will not be compromised while managing the traffic,” it said.

Motorists using the Second Link should check for the latest traffic updates on the One Motoring website or MyTransport.SG portal before they embark on their journey, ICA added.

Earlier, social media users said that the collapsed canopies caused a massive traffic jam at the checkpoint.

Facebook user Titiek Rohani MK posted two pictures taken by her sister who commutes daily into Singapore on Facebook showing the fallen canopy, and added: "Vehicles diverted towards Woodlands Checkpoint."

Another post on Facebook by Suthen Shemu’el showed the motorcyclists milling around a fallen structure at A1 arrival gate at the Tuas Checkpoint.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it sent a fire engine and an ambulance to the scene.
