IS IT WORTH PURSUING A DEGREE TODAY?
Author: Arthur Lee

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) released a report yesterday (3 February 2016) on the declining job vacancies in Singapore.

According to the report, job vacancies fell by 7,400 last September from the same month in 2014.

And industry experts are concerned about the mismatch between the kinds of jobs workers look for and the kinds of jobs that employers find difficulty filling.

But the issue is deeper than that.

According to NTUC Director for Youth Development and Labour Member of Parliament, Desmond Choo, there is a mismatch in education skills versus employers’ expectations. This, he said, was a growing concern among youth.

In his maiden Parliament speech on 25 January 2016, Choo said that in today’s economy, “there will be new sectors and jobs that will require skills and knowledge that are new even to those who just graduated”.

He added that there should be a tighter nexus between learning and job requirements. He cautioned that young people who aspire for a degree should not make it a mere paper chase but adds real value in improving career and job prospects.

Choo also suggested that the youth should equip themselves with the skills so that we are “future-ready”.

Indeed, the Minister for Manpower Lim Swee Say also agreed that in a situation where there is a mismatch in terms of what employers are looking for and the skills and experience that jobseekers have, he said the SkillsFuture initiative will equip workers with the relevant skills.

There have been much news about the impending economic slowdown. Hence, there is now a real need for a change in mindset for both employers and employees to improve themselves in terms of skills.

Since, the SkillsFuture Credit is available to tap on, Singaporeans should not delay in undergoing training to either deepen their skills or even learn another skill in order to be “Future-Ready”.

You shouldn't pursue a degree unless you are from an elite school. Why would a taxi driver or plumber need a degree?

If you want to emigrate a degree from an overseas Uni may help.

If you stay in Spore, your options are limited especially with all the cheap foreigners coming to Spore.
Maybe it is better to join the PAP & learn to kiss butt. As they say if you can't beat them, join them. However you will have to get in line because many foreigners are already in line e.g. Yang Yin

there's a 9-month hardcore coding course in sf, and successful grads of this course are placed for a software career in the valley for a starting pay of us$120k per year plus signing bonus. the school collects a 10% commission from base pay for the first year of placement. suddenly, former university grads in non-engineering and non-compscience programs without a job are becoming super coders and wanted jobbers in less than a year. the course is brutal, and only those with an apt for programming and problem-solving get through.

A degree will only get you that interview. It is more important to have the relevant skills that employers need. Take for example, so many computer science students can't code for nuts yet they want to become project managers.

Blue collar worker jobs also need to be more attractive. In the west, people are willing to pick up a trade for a living because of stronger unions and minimum wage. Here in Singapore, we treat blue workers like crap.

I have taken computing courses at the Uni level in Canada & you really have to sacrifice your sleep time because coding can be very difficult. You really have to enjoy coding otherwise you will be miserable.

However if you like coding there are plenty of good paying jobs waiting in North America.

For younger who got no job and not looking for job presently or in the future /// , skills future credit is of no use indeed. Should allow the credit to be encashed or at least offer as income tax rebate. Hahaha

Pardon my ignorance. Is coding the same as programming ? When someone says "learn coding", does it mean learn computer programming ?

If you know how to code, does that make you a programmer ?

The term "degree" is very broad. A humanities degree has always been worthless. On the other hand a degree in a professional field can put you on the road to riches.

Sinkies should pursue degrees that set them apart from the masses.
