Singapore’s four-year stint in the Malaysian Super League came to a screeching halt yesterday after the Republic’s LionsXII football team were unceremoniously ditched following a Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) executive committee meeting.

The FAM reportedly decided not to extend their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), signed in 2011, which sees a Singaporean side compete in the Malaysian league for the first time since 1994.

According to reports, the decision was reached following a unanimous vote by members of the FAM executive committee.

The LionsXII will officially exit the league at the end of the current Malaysian football league season on December 12. But their departure might come as early as this Saturday, if they fail to overturn a 1-4 first-leg deficit against Pahang in the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals at Jalan Besar Stadium.

With the MoU coming to an end, it also meant that Malaysia’s Under-23 team, Harimau Muda, will no longer play in Singapore’s S-League.

FAM deputy president Datuk Afandi Hamzah was quoted as saying on Tuesday night that the decision is “best for both parties”.

He added that FAM had not informed FAS of the decision yet. “It is the best way forward,” he said.

Singapore had previously parted ways with Malaysian football in 1994, in acrimonious fashion, after winning the Malaysian League and Cup double.

Their return in 2012, in the form of the LionsXII, under coach V. Sundramoorthy, saw them finish runners-up in the 12-team MSL behind champions Kelantan.

The following season, they went on to win the MSL title but they finished empty handed in 2014.

This season, led by Fandi Ahmad, the team won the Malaysian FA Cup in May and finished seventh in the league. – TODAY Online, November 25, 2015.

The 12 members from the executive committee of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) voted unanimously on Tuesday night against continuing the Singaporean team's involvement.

The announcement may have come as a surprise to Football Association of Singapore (FAS). Sources tell ESPN FC that high-ranking officials of FAS and FAM spoke as recently as last week and there was no indication that LionsXII wouldn't be involved next year.

The increasingly high cost of travel and accommodation for Malaysian teams visiting from north of the Causeway -- the Malaysian ringgit has declined more than 20 per cent over the past year -- and the reluctance of FAS to cover travel expenses is believed to be behind the decision. On top of that, away teams believe that the bouncier, synthetic surface of Jalan Besar Stadium gives the speedy LionsXII side an unfair advantage.

Also making Singapore's involvement in the MSL less attractive is how FAS independently sold the TV rights of LionsXII matches instead of keeping them within the larger pool.

Money is the issue. Refuse to cover more expense, refuse to grant more TV right to Malaysia FA.

Another example of failed Sinkie diplomacy due to persistent beggar-thy-neighbour approach to signing long-term deals: we're always seeking to squeeze every advantage out of any contract we sign to the detriment or our neighbours, instead seeking a win-win solution. Just like the way we handled our water and railway negotiations with M'sia.

In the end we lose: we need the MSL more than they need us. Serves the bloody FAS right.

Anything related to sinkies are shits.

Only foreign parties can squeeze the balls of the Singapore government.

They act as though every dollar and cents rightfully should be earned by them

Look what the shit they put us in..not able to view the four year once World Cup..unless we pay their ransom. So if they are held ransom by outside parties, they deserve it.

And to top it all, we spent $10 million for Mah Bow Tan's folly, boosting that we can reach the World cup final in 2010..

PAP Singapore is just being consistent. After all, all neighbouring countries hate PAP Singapore (except for 69.9).

Because of their size. Our PAP govt only bullies less developed neighbours while sucking up to big nations.

Singapore team booted out of Malaysian league

Kuala Lumpur (AFP) - Singapore's Lions XII team has been kicked out of Malaysia's domestic league without explanation after the Malaysian football body decided not to extend its participation.

The decision ends a brief but successful stay by the Lions XII, who won the Malaysia Super League in 2013 and the Malaysian FA Cup in May after returning to Malaysian football in 2012.

Singapore had earlier departed the football scene in the neighbouring country in 1994 after winning the Malaysian league and cup double.

A statement posted on the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) website late on Tuesday said a four-year memorandum of understanding signed with Singapore in 2011 will not be extended.

"This means the visiting team from Singapore that is Lions XII will not be playing in the M-League from the 2016 season," the statement said, without giving reasons.

FAM officials were not immediately available for comment, but the Malay Mail newspaper Wednesday cited deputy president Afandi Hamzah as saying the decision was motivated by travel costs.

"The biggest concern was the cost involved. It was not cheap travelling to and from Singapore and many teams found it difficult," he said.

Top Singaporean footballer Hariss Harun, vice-captain of the 2013 champions, said he feels "very sad" for the Lions XII players.

"You can just imagine all these confusion and uncertainties, all the questions going through (their heads)," he told AFP.

"We are talking about 20-25 players," said Hariss, who plays for Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta'zim.

"At this stage in the season, even if some of them or most of them go back to the S-League (Singapore league) clubs, they cannot negotiate what they want. I hope there?s something that can be done to help the squad and help our team."

Former Asian Football Confederation general secretary Peter Velappan called the move "drastic" and warned it doesn't help Malaysian football, where corruption is a major problem and the national team is languishing at 171st in the world.

"It is a drastic decision. It is not in the interest of Malaysian football players nor ties between the two countries," the Malaysian told AFP.

Velappan said if cost was a factor in the decision, then cash-rich FAM could subsidise the travel expenses.

Recently, Khairy Jamaluddin, the country's youth and sports minister, told parliament that match-fixing was "shackling" Malaysia's attempts to progress as a footballing nation.

A 1994 scandal saw 21 players and coaches sacked and 58 players suspended, and in 2012, the FAM suspended 18 youth players and banned a coach for life for match-fixing.

Agree. The trait is inherited from the PAP government which takes a bloody arrogant attitude even in matters where national survival is at stake. They would rather squeeze blood from stone than work towards a long term amicable friendship. This attitude can also be seen in how they treat Singaporeans. It infects every strata of government from cabinet to the civil service.

The Malaysians were trying the extort money from Singapore and FAS refused to cave in. I fully support the FAS on this issue.

FAM under control of sultan of pahang now for three decades. he takes money from FIFA for his personal spending initilally, but now his son takes over as the sultan of pahang now serves the AFC. Under this father/son stewardship, malaysia which use to beat south korea and japan, now languish at the bottom heap. Money meant for football dvelopment instead goes to london casino spending and lavish lifestyle.
If anyone care to remember, when the sultan of pahang was the FAM president and agung of malaysia, singapore supporters treated him like a pariah at kallang stadiium. all kinds of insults was hurled at him when he entered the stadium for the malaysia-singapore match.and the malaysia national anthem was booed. I think he never forgive that incident and until today, singapore supporters and FAS is like a thorn in the flesh for pahang royalty.
