BONN, Germany: The Singapore Botanic Gardens is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, after it was inscribed at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee in Bonn, Germany on Saturday (July 4).

The decision was met with cheers from a jubilant Singapore delegation, led by Culture, Community and Youth Minister, Lawrence Wong. Others in the Singapore delegation included chief executive of the National Heritage Board Rosa Daniel and CEO of the National Parks Board, Kenneth Er.

In his thank you speech, Mr Wong said he was “deeply honoured” to have the Singapore Botanic Gardens inscribed as the nation’s first World Heritage Site. He added: “This is a very humbling experience … and I thank the Chairperson and all the members of the World Heritage Committee for the unanimous and wholehearted endorsement of the recommendation.”

"A great Jubilee year gift to Singaporeans," said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his Facebook page. "The Gardens played an important part in making Singapore a Garden City. Besides supplying shrubs and trees for our parks and roadsides, the Gardens also trained horticulturalists in the school of ornamental horticulture."

Mr Lee congratulated the National Heritage Board, NParks, and Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth which had worked hard for the successful inscription.

The 156-year-old Singapore attraction joins more than 1,000 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in some 160 countries. It is the third Botanic Gardens to be listed as a World Heritage Site, after Kew Gardens in England and the Padua Gardens in Italy and Singapore's first World Heritage Site.

The garden belongs and will always stay put in Sillypore.
Sillypore can simply declared it as their own heritage even without spending so much $$$ just to get it registered as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It doesn't serve much purpose at all and it doesn't boost our tourism to the next higher level.
Will more tourist come from all over the world just to have a peek at the small little garden?
What a waste of tax payers $$$ just to maintain the international status of a garden.

You are really a typical opposition whiner! Little wonder most voters treat you as noise.

The whole is full of ancient ruins, temples, palaces or some mountain. Having them declared as UNESCO sites usually leads to a huge boost in both international and local tourism.

You are really a typical MIW sucker. Little wonder most voters treat you as boss carrier.

If you think simply declaring a small garden will lead to huge boost in both international and local tourism, might as well declare the entire small Sillypore island as UNESCO heritage site
since it "got so many" as you claimed full of ancient ruins, temples, palaces or some mountain make out of a mole hill.

Will that even boost international and local tourism tenfold much more than you anticipate?

That's the thing. You can't go around making self-declarations of UNESCO sites. If that was possible, every moron would be declaring their own shit as UNESCO heritage sites. Low Thia Khiang might even be tempted to name his Hougang SMC as one too.

UNESCO sites are declared by an independent body to ensure there is no bias in the process. PAP does not have control over UNESCO, you twit!!

A short list of places in China that made the UNESCO list and is now flooded with foreign and local tourists: The Great Wall of Chink, The Forbidden Palace (again in Chink), Mount Huangshan.

I am glad that our Botanical Gardens can now stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these famous sites!

Yay for becoming a UNESCO world heritage site, but that crowing about SG50 is getting quite irksome.

You must be dreaming to even think that UNESCO will do such a huge flavor for your ah gong in Sillypore even without any contributions $$$ involved, you twit!!

Only money talks in this world and if you wish too your "ah gong's old house" can also be preserved under the name of UNESCO heritage site if you fund them
with a huge amount of $$$. But then again, do you know where exactly where all the funds ended up?

Funding
The conservation and protection of World Heritage sites wouldn’t be possible without the financial resources to meet World Heritage needs. Sources of income include the World Heritage Fund, which receives most of its income from compulsory contributions from countries (States Parties) and from voluntary contributions. Other sources of income include profits derived from sales of World Heritage publications, or funds-in-trust that are donated by countries for specific purposes.

It doesn't means that you got the UNESCO sticker slapped onto your site will boost tourism unless your site is a real place of interests that is really attractive.

Who the fuck cares about a UNESCO World Heritage site? I care more about my CPF being returned in full sum when I'm 55!

UNESCO in my view, is only about tourism monies.

For example: Lijiang.
The place was almost completely destroyed in 1996 earthquake. The government then rebuilt it to attract tourists.
UNESCO awarded in 1997.
The local naxi people all left and staying elsewhere. Those naxi people you see in Lijiang are employed to attract tourists.

Indeed. And don't forget Malacca City - UNESCO World Heritage City. At least that has some genuine culture and heritage.

The Botanic Gardens is just a huge park.

Some good came from that earthquake after all. And now, Lijiang is a popular tourist destination.

Many high-rise buildings in the area were torn down and traditional single-family dwellings were constructed in their place. Reconstruction assistance from the provincial government and the World Bank was used to restore traditional streets, bridges, and canals. These efforts played a major role in Lijiang's efforts to achieve the World Heritage Site designation by UNESCO.[5]

Go find the pre-earthquake photo and compare. The whole town is totally different.
XiAn is rebuilding the old 长安 city (to attract tourists), which disappeared many hundred years ago. This could be the next UNESCO.
