WHILE I welcome Manpower Minister Lim Swee Say's clarification on fraudulent educational qualifications ("Work pass, PR applicants who lie to be 'dealt with firmly'"; Tuesday), it raises several more issues.

First, Mr Lim makes a distinction between a fraudulent degree and one that is obtained from a degree mill.

However, insofar as some degree mills literally confer on the "student" a certificate without any work being done, the distinction between a company that sells a fake Cambridge University degree and a degree awarded by "Cambridgeshire University" are very slight.

Second, the popularity of degree mills is such that a supporting industry of "accreditation mills" has emerged to give degree mills the veneer of respectability and legitimacy. Singapore needs to stay one step ahead of the game

Third, and most importantly, the intent of an individual who gets either a fraudulent degree or certification from a degree mill is often the same: to deceive or mislead. This suggests a lack of personal integrity.

This issue may get more prevalent and intractable. I urge the authorities to take a stronger stance against such degree mills, and not push the buck to employers.

He is my MP and pulling up his socks months ago......... w frequent meetings with residents
but be a rich constituency, and having not benefitting at all from the last budget with residents telling off he might not be voted in again
in fact if oppo sends in a strong team they can just walk over him.......... esp he is accomplice in fake degrees n now awarding EP SP without due diligence as verification is outsourced to India,,,,,,,, it is like asking the crook to certify that the other is not a crook

All this talk about degree mills is just another disguised attack on foreigners! I am appalled at the deep-rooted racism of Singaporeans, who think that non-Singaporeans are inferior to them. It's time for the government to increase the budget of the PA, so that we can interact more with residents and organize more bonding sessions between native sinkies and new citizens

Because obtaining a degree from a degree mill is just another disguised attempt to cheat the system and Singaporeans are getting fed up with being replaced by less capable individuals in an unfair playing field. You should get more PA members to gather feedback to bond with the residents, or else you are guilty of just selling out your own country.
