Each time sinkies want to complain that PAP ministers and civil servants are the world best paid politicians, I always laugh at their stupidity. PAP ministers are only paid around $2-3M a year. Politicians in most Third World countries officially take a much lower pay, but under the table collect hundreds of millions of dollars from their own private deals. Anyone still remember Marcos from the Philippines?

Ah Gong got it right when he paid civil servant and politicians enough money to live comfortably and to reduce the temptation for corruption, and at the same time, strengthening CPIB to go after corruption at all levels.

Anyone who thinks PAP is overpaid should go Google for corruption in typical Asiatic, African, Latin American, Russian and post-Soviet republics. That will show you must little we actually pay our politicians, once we factor in all the extra coffee money.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Malaysia’s Home Ministry has seized an explosive book on timber corruption in the Malaysian state of Sarawak.

All copies of Money Logging: On the Trail of the Asian Timber Mafia on display at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair were confiscated on Thursday by the police, according to GB Gerak Budaya, the South East Asia distributor of Money Logging.

According to The Malaysian Insider, six other titles were also seized at the book fair – Shi’ite Islam; Hinduisme Agama Tauhid Terawal (Hinduism, The Earliest Religion); Mengenali Allah Melalui Agama Purba (Getting to Know Allah Through Ancient Religions); Marx, Sang Pendidik Revolusioner (Marx, The Revolutionary Educator); Hidup Bagaikan Sungai Mengalir (Life Like A Flowing River); and copies of the Quran.

Money Logging is authored by historian Lukas Straumann who is also the executive director of the Swiss human rights and environmental NGO, the Bruno Manser Fund.

Money Logging exposes the role of Sarawak’s Chief Minister and current Governor, Taib Mahmud in the exploitation of the state’s vast natural resources and documents how Taib and his closest family members became billionaires in post-colonial Sarawak.

The Malaysian politician’s family has stakes in over 400 companies in 25 countries around the globe.

Author Lukas Straumann reacted with disbelief to the seizure of his painstakingly-researched book. “Freedom of expression is a core value of any democratic society. The Malaysian Home Ministry has no legal basis for the seizure of my book and I do personally call on the Home Minister, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to instruct his officials to release the seized copies of Money Logging.”

Money Logging already made headlines prior to its publication end of last year when Taib Mahmud’s London lawyers threatened Amazon and Bergli Books, the Swiss publisher, to sue them if they published and distributed the book.

However, the Taib family later failed to live up to their legal threats and Taib’s lawyers did not reply to an invitation to the Sarawak politician to defend his position at a public event in London.

The Bruno Manser Fund said that it will make sure Malaysian readers continue to be able to read Money Logging, either as an e-book or by direct distribution from Switzerland.

The book will be launched in Geneva, Switzerland, with a public event at the Geneva Press Club on 5 May, next Tuesday.

Malaysians normally challenge book seizure and prohibition of sale of books in the court and not were lifted.
Books criticising Dr M are readily available. So far only cartoons making fun of najib and wife were available but were prohibited by new PIG ( police inspector general).

Money from timber exploits seldom returned to where it was extracted. It was either invested in the purchase country such as US of put in financial hubs such as Singapore or hong Kong for tax avoidance purpose. That us why Indonesia and Sabah/Sarawak never did get the wealth back to the rural masses.
