WASHINGTONUS - US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday returned dozens of illegally smuggled ancient artifacts to Egypt, including a Greco-Roman style Egyptian coffin.

"Preserving mankind's cultural heritage is an increasingly difficult challenge in today's society. To think that some of these treasured artifacts were recovered from garages, exposed to the elements, is unimaginable," said ICE Director Sarah R. Saldana at a repatriation ceremony at the Washington-based National Geographic Society.

objectively, not all the missing treasures were stolen by the white men. it is said, during the ROC Warlord era 1916-1927, the warlords who controlled Beiping sold or gave away some treasures to the foreigners. according to Li Zongren memoir, he implied that Feng Yuxiang took some treasures from the palace and sold them in the black market or gave them to his foreigner friends. if that is the case for certain treasures, in consideration of the unique circumstances then, the PRC government should offer to buy back the treasures, not just demand for the unconditional return of them.

i corrected the total to 696,000 which starts with my favorite number. they only shipped 3000 crates containing the 696,000 over and left the majority behind. zhou en lai sent in the pla army to protect the remaining treasures at the beijing palace museum during the cultural revolution after they were restored there after the commie victory. chiang was correct in moving the pieces from beijing before the war as japs were closing in in 1937. for that, he deserved kudos for securing china's best kept treasures. otherwise, they would be in tokyo during ww2 and possibly destroyed, ironically, by the americans during the firebombing of tokyo.

it is very regrettable that the KMT failed to take them all to Taiwan in 1949. the 75% of treasures left behind in China, 25% is in Beijing national museum, the remaining 50% remain sealed in the original boxes or unrevealed to the public, most of it in Nanjing at the present time.

besides the british , European and Taiwan , nihonji also took many back to japan.
but this is a blessing in disguise.

Opium war in 1850s to early 1900 period and Chinese had to pay UK60M pound damages to the eight countries allied attacked 八国联军 against China. Therefore from the early 1900s onwards China become a poor nation.

yes. when I toured China esp in the western suburbs 20 years ago, 99% of all artefacts in temples were destroyed by the red guards. Even the China officials themselves have expressed regrets at the huge amount of irreversible lost or damage from the red guards. most of teh old temples are just empty shells left . the ornate carvings on the roof and even ceiling were damaged from the fanaticism of the guards akin to religious islamic fanatics you have today. really sad to see ornate stone lion carvings from ming era without heads and with partial heads.
