SINGAPORE — The two Germans who trespassed into Bishan Depot last November and vandalised an SMRT train have been sentenced to nine months’ jail and three strokes’ caning each.

Andreas Von Knorres, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were found guilty of vandalising the train in the wee hours of the morning on Nov 8 last year. They were also convicted of unauthorised entry to the depot on Nov 7 and Nov 8 last year.


The duo were reportedly arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Nov 14 last year, with the help of Malaysian police, and have been in remand in Singapore since Nov 22.

The court heard that the pair committed the offences during their first visit to the Republic.

District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said that their sentence will be backdated to Nov 22.

SINGAPORE - A Singapore court on Thursday sentenced two young German men to nine months in prison and three strokes of the cane for spray-painting a metro train in the city-state last year.

Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were sentenced after pleading guilty to vandalism and trespassing. Both asked for mercy before sentencing and called their acts a "stupid mistake".

"The imprisonment sentence is nine months in total and the mandatory three strokes of the cane," District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said.

They were sentenced to four months in jail for breaking into a suburban train depot in November 2014 and five months and three strokes of the cane for vandalising a carriage with spray paint.

Both men fled Singapore after the incident but were caught in neighbouring Malaysia en route to Australia and extradited.

Singapore, a leading Asian financial hub, is known for its tough stance on crime.

If they were not caught then they would laugh and brag about their heroic deed but now when caught it is a 'stupid mistake' Cane the bastards hard.

Caning should be abolished... It is a 3rd world primitive punishment.. It is a sinkie disgrace to have caning as a punishment..

I agree that the Germans should not be caned but I think caning should be a punishment that is reserved for criminals who inflict pain eg rapists.

If it wasn't for the tough stance against vandalism thanks to the PAP, the MRT trains would end up looking like this and the driver wouldn't even be able to see through his windscreen.

If ah Tiongs were caught doing such stuff then they should be praised for not shitting on the trains and should be appropriately rewarded preferably monetarily.

Graffiti is a common scene in Deutschland. They are works of art...

Nobody gets jailed and canned...SG laws are really barbaric and middle-aged.
