Dutch national gets only 1 day jail for punching singaporean air steward

A Dutch Retiree who punched a Singaporean TigerAir Air steward was jailed for 1 day on Friday.

Gerrit Eveleens, 66, was also fined $3,000.

He had admitted to punching Mr Tan Leek Hwee, 46, in his shoulder on board a TigerAir flight while it was preparing to take-off at Terminal 2, Changi Airport at about 4pm on Jan 22.

Eveleens was on the TigerAir flight as he was transiting in Singapore from Indonesia on his way to Bangkok.

He had attacked Mr Tan because he was angry that Mr Tan had asked him to move back to his assigned seat.

Eveleens had moved to an empty seat on row 13 of the flight instead of his allocated seat. Mr Tan has explained that the seat on row 13 was a seat with extra leg room so Eveleens would have to pay extra for the seat.







Mr Tan handed Eveleens a seat upgrade form to fill up but the Dutch national threw it at Mr Tan and shouted at him "Shut up, I don't speak English."

Mr Tan then asked the captain for assistance who managed to convince Eveleens to return to his original seat. However, while walking back to his original seat, Eveleens suddenly Punched Mr Tan on the shoulder

The captain saw this and told Eveleens to get off the plane but he refused. They then called the police and Eveleens shouted vulgarities and insults as he left.

The prosecutor said that Eveleens should be given jail time as he had attacked the air steward without any provocation and he had caused inconvenience to the other passengers as the flight was boarding.

Eveleens said in court through an interpreter that he was very sorry and he just wanted to go back home quickly.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.

Aiyaa... these ang mohs just fooling around lah. It was a friendly pat on the shoulder, not a punch. Very common greeting in the West. A misunderstanding. No need to overreact. The steward needs to attend more lessons on cross cultural interaction.

What a lame duck sentence. If it were the other way round and a Sinkie was caught punching an ang moh then the unfortunate will get a sentence closer to the maximum allowed.

The judge said the plaintiff must be jailed. Very righteous, no fines allowed! Can you see it is a deterence sentence?

To really deter air or road rage the jail term should be longer than just 1 day. The police as well as the courts appear afraid to upset the ang moh community here and thats a shame.

When ang mohs do it it's ok. Until sinkies experience it themselves they allow ang mohs leeway. It's as simple as this. Then again the law lets them off easier than anyone else. It's funny but there's no outcry over this at all.

The way to solve this problem is for sinkies to go up to this ang moh after his jail and rain him with blows.

if the law dont do anything, then sinkies themselves must do something. that is the logic.

If this happens in the US, this Dutchie would have got serious jail time for disobeying the instruction of the steward.

How can sinkapore claim to be fighting terrorism when its court does not impose the harshest penalty on violence in an aircraft?

This is alrdy the best behaviour of a cheap skate angmoh one can get. If he was rich n took a prper airline like aeroflot theywould granted him first class seat at front row to hell with a bottle of Russia`s best volka to go along

One day's jail means he would be allowed to leave the Court's lock-up at 5pm the same day .......

It is obvious that PAP has a hand in this type of sentencing... why prosecution never appeal? Quite telling isnt it?
