SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 56-year-old man for suspected theft at People's Park Complex after he was detained by a security officer there.

The suspect allegedly snatched money from a victim who was remitting $4,000 to China at about 3pm on Tuesday.

The victim's cry for assistance caught the attention of the complex's security officer Jason Jai Ganesh, who was able to detain the suspect before police arrived.

A 20cm-long knife was found on him. Police said investigations are ongoing.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Daniel Tan commended Mr Ganesh for his public spiritidness leading to the arrest.

Police would also like to remind members of the public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

- Be alert of your surroundings at all times especially of suspicious persons who could be following them

- Be wary of strangers approaching you or trying to distract your attention

- Avoid carrying excessive cash in public, especially when you are alone. You should also refrain from wearing or exposing their jewelleries or monies in public that could potentially make you easy targets for crime. Arrange for a trusted friend or companion to escort you, where possible

- When confronted, you should remain calm. You should not put up a struggle especially if the culprit is armed with sharp objects like a knife or pen knife. You should try to take note as much details of the culprit as you possibly can, such as his appearance, clothing, height and other physical description. You should also take note of the culprit's direction and mode of escape

- Call '999' as soon as it is safe to do so
