'Sex-drug sellers' nabbed near Aljunied Station

SINGAPORE - Most peddlers of illegal sex drugs prefer to sell their wares at night in the dark, narrow alleys of Geylang.

But two alleged peddlers decided to take their business elsewhere, setting up shop right outside an MRT station in the morning.

They were quickly arrested after members of the public called the police.

The arrests, which took place at about 9.25am on Sunday, attracted a crowd of onlookers.

Dwee Wei Zhong, 21, who was working at a nearby coffee shop, said that the police nabbed the men and left the scene in about five minutes.

"I saw the police holding up a big, red plastic bag. They were confiscating the drugs," he added.

An eyewitness told Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao that the men were Chinese nationals, and were hawking about 20 types of pills.

A police spokesman confirmed that the two men, aged 29 and 30, were arrested outside Aljunied MRT Station and were referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for possessing illegal sexual enhancement pills.

When The New Paper spoke to staff of shops around the area, some of them said that it is uncommon for peddlers to sell their goods so close to the MRT station.

"They usually set up around Geylang Lorong 23, and rarely come so close to the MRT station," said Timothy Goh, 36, who is self-employed and lives near the area.

Others said that the recent raids in Geylang may have prompted peddlers to move outside the red-light district.

A nearby shopkeeper who wanted to be known only as Mrs Ng, 37, said she has noticed an increase in the number of peddlers in the area.

She said: "There have been a few more peddlers turning up over the past few months.

"It's possible that they are moving here because of the raids in Geylang, but I'm not entirely sure."

Mr Dwee also said that the peddlers could be attracted by the large crowds that gather outside Aljunied Station during weekends.

According to a Straits Times report in November, HSA conducted 169 raids in Geylang from 2010 to 2013, and seized about 2.5 million pills and products worth more than $6 million.

Over that period, 26 people were either jailed or fined for selling sex drugs.

Those found guilty of illegally selling sex drugs can be jailed up to two years, fined up to $10,000, or both.
