[h=1]JOB VACANCIES FOR NURSES AND SALES ASSISTANT ARE SHUNNED BY LOCALS: MOM DATA[/h]
Post date:
27 Jan 2015 - 1:55pm

MOM data released on Tuesday indicates that job vacancies in nursing and retail shop assistant positions are the hardest to find Singaporeans to fill.

In total there were 67,400 job vacancies as of September 2014 and 25% of them (12,330) were for service and sales workers.

Some of the jobs within this 25% were shop assistances, security guards, waiters and more.

MOM also explained in a press release that 4/5 vacancies were in the service industry.

One thing that the statistics noted were that registered nurses were the top PMET position hardest to fill with locals was registered nurses.

There were 720 vacancies for Singaporeans in registered nurse positions and employers complained that there was too much competition from other employers making it difficult to find locals for the job.

The second hardest PMET job to fill was enrolled/assistant nurse followed by software, web and multimedia developer.

For these positions, some of the difficulties were caused by an unattractive pay and a lack of local having experience.

While employers may continue to complain about a “lack of Singaporeans” for the job, one reality is that this is usually directly related to salary. If these jobs paid high salaries, would Singaporeans continue to shun such positions?

In other countries, jobs that are difficult to fill with locals will see higher salaries as employers try to attract more workers. In Singapore, companies simply turn to foreigners and continue to complain that they cant find locals for the job without offering higher salaries.

The other job which MOM cited was difficult to find locals to fill was shop assistants and security guards.

Again, these jobs have very low salaries. For Singaporeans expecting to feed their families, pay their HDB loans, and fund their cost of living, the salaries of these positions are simply too low. Again, companies that cannot find locals simple scout for foreigners willing to work for less.

With this type of open immigration policy, companies will not increase wages to attract locals.

In the end, we continue to suffer from depressed wages while we continue to see in our state propaganda that there are “plenty of jobs available”.

What do you think?

I'll recommend those in their 30s and 40s without qualification to take up this skill if they are planning to emigrate.

the workplace must be air-conned, no uniform, no dress code, location must be near mrt station, convenient, and in new posh office building with stylish furnitures and furnishings. and there must be flexibility with work hours, the less work hours the better.

Aya the elites will say, if pay higher then cost will be passed down to consumer...they always win, without looking at the root cause.

Cost of health care is already high because of extraordinary profits. To pay nurses more, just don't earn so much profit lah.

Agree, so the people must rebut the PAP like how you rebutted my point, if everyone keeps quiet, Singaporean will forever be lowly paid and employers hire cheap foreigners.

Besides from the obvious point about shitty wages and long hours...

Retail is a dead-end job anyway. More people are shopping online.

As for nurses... you'll have to ask the rent-seeking cronies who own the polyclinics and hospitals. They would gladly outsource nursing jobs to cheap FTs so a little more money enters their own pockets. In fact, many FT doctors have already been imported. And the 'labour movement' with the likes of Lim Swee Say and Chan Chun Sing... guess which side are they supporting?

In the US of A and Australia, nurses are paid very well !:o

They are paid NORMAL wages for a trained and experienced nurse.

It's just that nurses in Sinkieland, like most other jobs and industries, have wages artificially depressed by the pro-business PAP government. That is why George Quek of Breadtalk loves to wine and dine and mingle with the pappies, because he knows a Breadtalk bakery or Toast Box staffed by cheap FTs means that he gets to pocket more money.
