Excavator collision course

A man ran over a woman villager with an excavator, breaking her leg, in a dispute between villagers and a property developer in Luan, Anhuinews.com reports. The villagers were concerned that the developer’s project near a fish pond would contaminate the water. They were arguing with the construction staff when an excavator operator threatened to run over a woman villager who was blocking the vehicle. She did not get away in time and her leg was caught under the machinery. The developer said it would foot the woman’s medical bills.

Parking ticket fury

An angry BMW owner in Hefei dumped two bags of banknotes worth a million yuan (HK$1.26 million) at a police post after officers refused to cancel his parking ticket, Anhuinews.com reports. The man had been issued the ticket for illegal parking. He went to the police post to ask the officers to cancel the ticket, but when they refused, he threw down the two bags of cash on a desk, the report said.

‘Snapping’ turtle


A turtle taught a drunk man a lesson by leaving the man with a swollen lip after he tried to eat it alive, Beijing Youth Daily reports. The man, who smelled strongly of alcohol, had stopped by a seafood stall in Tongzhou, picked up the 20cm-long Chinese softshell turtle and held it close to his mouth, declaring that he would eat it alive. But the turtle reached out to bite his lip and held on for about 10 minutes as the man struggled with it. He eventually walked away with a swollen lip.

Water cooler ‘prank’

A cleaner told a court that he added insecticide to a water cooler in his company dormitory as a prank, The Beijing Times reports. The man said he had returned to the dormitory drunk and, after long, stressful hours of work, poured 100ml of insecticide into the water cooler. His deed came to light when his colleagues checked surveillance camera footage after detecting a strong smell in the water. No one drank it.

A Grade Three pupil in Fuzhou wrote an essay about a prince who forced his pregnant wife to have an abortion after he found out that the child was conceived by the woman’s ex-boyfriend, Strait City Daily reports. The pupil’s teacher posted a picture of the child’s composition online, which caused a stir on social media. Internet users blamed soap operas for having a bad influence on the child.

Cattle poisoned

Cattle farmers in a village near Fuzhou woke up on Tuesday to find more than 20 of their cattle dead and dozens ill, Fjsen.com reports. The farmers said 45 of their cattle had died over the past two months. A veterinarian said the animals were poisoned. Police were investigating.

An eight-year-old boy run over by a truck in Xinyang detailed his own final arrangements after learning that his family could not afford his 200,000 yuan medical bills, Jinghua.cn reports. “Dad, please burn my books as offerings to me after I die, and please bury me with Grandpa,” he was quoted as saying.

Canteen hogs

Students in a Xinxiang university occupied the campus canteen to prepare for their final examinations, Xinhua reports. They said there were not enough seats in the study rooms.

Cabbies on strike


Hundreds of striking taxi drivers and their taxis blocked Nanjing Lukou International Airport and Nanjing South Railway Station on Thursday, Huanqiu.com reports. The drivers said their company charged them up to 9,000 yuan a month in fees, imposing a huge financial burden on them.

Drugs from animal feed

A “miracle drug” taken by a Nanjing resident turned out to be made from animal feed, Xinhua reports. The drug was touted as lowering blood sugar and blood pressure but was made from leftover Chinese medicine meant for cattle feed. The 70-year-old woman who took the drug did not have any serious ill effects.

A Nanchang woman got back with her ex-husband after she found out she was still labelled as “darling” in his cellphone contact list, Jiangxi Daily reports. The ex-husband had left his phone on a train and a conductor called the number saved under “darling”. The woman answered the call, and upon finding out, was moved.

Ailing father, filial son

A 10-year-old boy in Gutong county collected waste on weekends to earn money for his father’s leukaemia treatment, Jxnews.com.cn reports. The boy’s father could not afford the 600,000 yuan in medical fees and wanted to give up treatment but the boy insisted otherwise. The boy earned 41 yuan from collecting more than 300kg of waste over the past two months. His father has since received donations from people who heard about the story.

Stunt goes viral


A video showing a Dalian man drinking 20kg of alcohol and eating nails and razors has gone viral, Liaoshen Evening News reports. The man was seen in the 15-minute video drinking a basin of alcohol and stopping in between to eat soap, shampoo and toothpaste. He then swallowed three nails and a few razors before screaming for help. He was taken to hospital. The man said he had wanted to show that he was better than those who liked to show off how much alcohol they could take.

Jailed over smash


A Dalian man has been sentenced to 10 years’ jail for driving under the influence of drugs and causing an accident that involved 22 cars, including a police vehicle, Xinhua reports. The man took methamphetamines, which caused him to hallucinate. He ran red lights and smashed into the cars. He was also fined 120,000 yuan.

Pregnant after drugs


A Wenling woman who abused drugs because she was upset she could not get pregnant, found out she was with child only after she was arrested, Chinanews.com reports. The 27-year-old said she often argued with her husband over her infertility and that she would not have taken the drugs had she known she was pregnant.

Prostitute conned

A rich young man in Yongkang left without paying after patronising a prostitute and even stole her smartphone, Qianjiang Evening News reports. The 22-year-old had promised to give the prostitute 1,000 yuan but left the hotel with the woman’s phone when she was in the shower. The woman called the police and both were arrested on suspicion of theft and prostitution.
