SINGAPORE: In response to the siege that resulted in the deaths of two hostages in Sydney, Australia on Monday (Dec 15), Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon that he has asked the Ministry of Law to review the framework for granting bail.

The gunman at the centre of the Sydney siege, Man Haron Monis, was allegedly out on bail for charges of being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife, as well as charges related to more than 50 allegations of sexual assault, according to Australian media reports.

In his Facebook post, Mr Shanmugam expressed his shock and sadness at the death of "the heroic duo who protected those in the cafe during the Sydney hostage situation", adding: "The world is now afflicted with this madness - deranged men running amok, and using religion as an excuse to kill innocent people."

The fact that the hostage-taker had a history, and was out on bail while being accused of a serious crime "calls for a careful re-look", wrote the minister. "I have asked MinLaw to review our framework for granting bail."

Knee jerk reaction.............without knowing the actual details of the charges. This loose verbiage should not come from a Minister of Law.

somebody should just ask this power hungry APNN kaypoh ....wtf is it his business?

he is not even the home affairs minister anymore and he is just talking more and more about internal security issues.... WTF IS IT YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS CB? He is basically saying that we should take away the power from the courts to decide whether they should be granting bail ..... like more executive interference and further curtailment of judicial power by fettering their ability to decide any fucking thing.....

this mama is getting too powerful for his own good and pinky better go do the glenn knight on him before he gets totally out of hand.....

This mamadrama Shame-mugam MiniSTAR of Law (not Justice as in most First World jurisdictions - the job title already tells you that Lightning is more interested in using the law to brainwash Sinkies and fix opposition) is very unproductive. Unproductive Sinkie workers including MiniSTARS should be replaced.

It is now almost end of 2014 and there is still no sight of the Contempt of Court Bill:

SINGAPORE, May 18 2012 — The Ministry of Law will table a Bill in Parliament later this year to put the law of contempt of court into statutory form, a ministry spokesperson said in response to queries from Today. On Monday, Law and Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam revealed the government was working on a draft Bill — in response to a question tabled by Nominated Member of Parliament Eugene Tan — but he did not indicate a timeline [of course not lah since he is so bloody slow and unproductive].

Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong had called for the law to be put into statutory form at the opening of the legal year in 2010.

Shanmugam, you sure there's no conflict of interest, you also being the Foreign Affairs Minister? Singapore being diplomatic and kissing the ass of bigger, more powerful countries. If you deny bail to foreigners, it may become an unpleasant diplomatic issue.
