Thai princess relinquishes royal title

BANGKOK: The woman who was in line to be Thailand’s next queen has relinquished her royal title.

A statement issued by the palace’s Royal Gazette late Friday said that Princess Srirasm, the wife of Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, had asked permission to give up her royal status.

The palace says 87-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej approved the request.

The statement gave no reason for the move, but it comes two weeks after Vajiralongkorn asked the government to strip several members of Srirasm’s family of their royally-issued surname after they had been detained in a police corruption probe.

Srirasm has been married to Vajiralongkorn since 2001, and the couple have one son.

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's crown prince has divorced his wife, in a dramatic fall from grace for a senior princess at a time of heightened anxiety over the health of the country's revered but ailing monarch.

A statement published by the palace in the early hours of Saturday in the Royal Gazette said Princess Srirasmi had relinquished her royal status, a move that ends her 13-year marriage to Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The rare public airing of palace intrigue comes after a string of the princess' relatives were arrested in a high-profile corruption scandal that has sent shockwaves through Thailand's elite.

"The king has granted permission to announce that Princess Srirasmi, the wife of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, has informed in a written document that she has resigned from her royal status," the palace said in a short statement, signalling an end to the marriage.

In May, Thailand's military seized power after months of violent street protests saying it needed to do so to protect the monarchy and restore order to the politically divided nation.

The king -- the world's longest-serving monarch, who is revered by many Thais as a semi-divine figure -- has been largely confined to hospital this year and pulled out of plans to hold a public audience earlier this month during his birthday celebrations.

Srirasmi married the crown prince in 2001 and had been expected to become queen. The couple have a nine-year-old son who was thought to be Prince Vajiralongkorn's most likely heir.

"This announcement will add a greater sense of uncertainty and anxiety among Thais over the future of their monarchy -- not just with the current generation, but with later generations too," Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a Thai expert at Japan's Kyoto University, told AFP.

It's expected. King Bhumibol is not going to last much longer, the Crown Prince needs a royal consort who wasn't a porn star, in order to appease the Thai people.

Thailand has been awash with rumours of the princess’ fate for weeks after a slew of her relatives were caught up in a widening police corruption scandal.

Several high profile figures have been arrested, including a host of senior policemen and military officers, while one of Thailand’s richest men is on the run from police on charges relating to the probe.

Srirasmi’s uncle, former Central Investigation Bureau chief Pongpat Chayapan, was charged with graft and lèse-majesté.

Lèse-majesté, or the crime of injury to royalty, is defined by Article 112 of the Thai Criminal Code, which states that defamatory, insulting or threatening comments about the king, queen or regent are punishable by three to 15 years in prison.

Meanwhile, her three brothers, Natthapol, Sitthisak and Narong, were similarly accused of defaming the monarchy.

Shortly after the sensational arrests of Srirasmi’s relatives, Vajiralongkorn requested that the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally bestowed name, Akharaphongpreecha. The BBC reported that the move was widely expected to be a first step to divorce and that he was already known to be estranged from his wife, although they continued to attend official functions together.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn issued a directive for his wife and her relatives to be stripped of their royally appointed surname Akharaphongpreecha after her relatives were arrested in a corruption case

Families can be given an honorary name by the Thai monarchy in return for their loyal service. The name was appointed to Princess Srirasmi after the couple married in 2001. The couple have a nine-year-old son.

'Individuals using the royal-appointed last name must change back to their old family name,' the office said in the statement.

The investigation has led to a lot of interest in the Thai royal family.

However news about the monarchy is heavily filtered by the palace. Under the lese-majeste laws, the world's harshest, anything deemed an insult or a threat to the monarchy is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

A total of 19 people were arrested in the crackdown on corruption, which led to raids that seized tens of millions of dollars in assets.

Among those arrested was Police Lieutenant General Pongpat Chayaphan, a former head of Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau. Pongpat and several others were also charged for allegedly citing the monarchy for personal benefit.
