SINGAPORE — The Republic was ranked 56th out of 103 major cities around the world for the cost of living for its citizens, according to the annual study by the Asia Competitiveness Institute at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Singapore trailed other major cities such as New York and London, which were 11th and 27th respectively, but emerged ahead of regional cities such as Seoul (65) and Hong Kong (66), according to the survey, which was released on Thursday (Nov 27). This meant it is now more costly for people to live in Singapore from two years ago, as the city-state was ranked 60th in the 2012 study.

In terms of expatriates’ cost of living, Singapore came in ninth, behind cities like Zurich (1st), New York (2nd) and London (7th). It was ranked ahead of cities such as Frankfurt, Paris and Melbourne, which were in 10th, 11th and 12th positions, respectively.

The study is based on the consumption patterns of ordinary residents in each country, in several weighted categories including food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing rents and utilities, education, health and transport. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

very bad for singapore because singapore is more expensive for people and yet Singapore does not implement minimum wages comparing with countries like korea and hong kong

8.00PM PM Lee answers questions on cost of living in Singapore: Expectations have changed. Today people have fewer children, but people put more pressure on themselves and for their children. Cost of living is on many people's minds. Yes, things have become more expensive, but incomes have gone up faster than prices.

Maybe food price should go thru mean testing.

If you earn $2 million, your nasi lemak should cost $200 a plate. If you earn $2000, it will cost $2.
