SINGAPORE - A man who claims to have been a policeman, and is believed to have also been a former bodyguard to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and special aide to former president S R Nathan, has been accused of fraud.
Mr Ananthan Thillagan, who is also said to have been a bodyguard for former Prime Minster Lee Kuan Yew, is alleged to have committed criminal breach of trust and fraud.
He is believed to have convinced fellow ex-police officer Sugendran Krishnan to invest $50,000 with him by claiming that several of Mr Nathan's friends, and even a Minister of Trade and Industry, had also invested in.
In a police report lodged on Monday, which a copy was also sent to AsiaOne, Mr Sugendran, 38, stated: "Because he was working for people in power, he often threw names of powerful people to reinforce his influence and connections."
Mr Ananthan allegedly assured Mr Sugendran that he would receive healthy monthly returns. However, according to Mr Sugendran, Mr Ananthan has "not paid me back a single cent after a few months".
According to The Straits Times, the police have verified the report and said that they "are looking into the matter".
