Two German men arrested for vandalism at SMRT Bishan depot

SINGAPORE - Two German nationals have been arrested for allegedly vandalising an SMRT train in Bishan Depot earlier this month.

The men, both 21, were nabbed by Malaysian police at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6pm on Thursday, and extradited to Singapore yesterday.

They are expected to be charged today with trespassing as well as vandalism, which carries a sentence of up to three years in jail or a maximum fine of $2,000, and a mandatoryC three to eight strokes of the cane.

The vandalism was detected on the morning of Nov 8, before the train entered service.

The police are still investigating how the two men, first-time visitors to Singapore, allegedly gained access to Bishan Depot to spray graffiti on a train. There was speculation that it had been an inside job after sources said no intrusion was detected, but the latest revelation raises fresh questions about security at SMRT's train depots.

This is the third breach at Bishan Depot since 2011, with two happening this year, despite improvements such as reinforced steel fences and intrusion detection systems. The depot at Changi was also breached in May 2010.

Yesterday, both SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said they would work with relevant parties to enhance the security of the transport network, but did not elaborate further.

Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport chair Cedric Foo stressed the seriousness of such lapses. "LTA and SMRT must learn from these episodes to improve security, including possibly a multi- layer defence approach," he added.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Tan Chye Hee, the Criminal Investigation Department director, said at a briefing yesterday that the two Germans entered Singapore on Nov 4. They flew off on Nov 8 - the same day SMRT discovered the graffiti, which was made up of crude words and symbols of multiple colours scrawled across two train doors.

Preliminary investigations established that the men travelled to Bangkok at one point, and help from the Royal Thai Police was sought to trace them.

The Royal Malaysia Police later arrested the duo at the airport on Thursday evening before they boarded a plane to Australia.

SAC Tan said the pair were on a visa that allowed them to work and travel in Australia, but declined to specify which part of the country they were going to.

Based on their current passports, the men were visiting Singapore for the first time earlier this month, SAC Tan added.

He also said there was nothing to suggest the duo were responsible for the previous vandalism incident at Bishan Depot in May. But the police will look into this possibility, he added.

That's because Singapore is such a small place that borders are only 30 minutes away in any direction.

However I would like to congratulate the Singapore authorities as they are the ones who do the excellent detective work to identify the culprits and passing on all the relevant information to the neighbors. For this we have to thank the PAP.

The Malaysian Police then have the easy job of arresting them.

I wonder how did the SPF track these 2 fellows as the culprit? Even if they were caught on SMRT camera, they would not have known the identity.

Also, I did not know that vandalism is an extraditable offence.

Spot on Sam.

But then again by making such remarks in this forum, you will be labelled as PAP IB or PAP dog for stating this fact.

I couldn't give a toss about what sort of label I am given as long as I stick to the facts. This is not about defending the PAP. It is all about making a calm and rational analysis of the situation so as to dispel the rhetoric and innuendo of the opposition IB.

Was it also the excellent police detective work that lead to the conclusion of mas selamat case that "he's either in Singapore or he's outside" apparently they couldn't even determine if a limping criminal was within the boundaries of a 600sqkm island.

Two German men arrested for vandalism at SMRT Bishan depot

SINGAPORE - Two men have been arrested for suspected involvement in vandalising an SMRT train at Bishan Depot on Nov 8. The men, both German nationals aged 21, were extradited from Malaysia earlier on Friday morning. They were arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport based on a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts here, as they were about to depart for Australia, said the police's Criminal Investigation Department Director Tan Chye Hee. -

The men will be charged in court on Saturday morning for vandalism and trespassing into a protected place, said Mr Tan, who was speaking to the media at a press conference. Based on preliminary investigations, the two men are believed by police to have left Singapore for an unspecified destination on Nov 8 shortly after having vandalised the train. Thereafter, they were located in Bangkok by the Royal Thai Police and later in Kuala Lumpur by the Royal Malaysia police. The men are believed to be working in Australia. Senior Assistant Commissioner Tan said: "The suspects had displayed a blatant disregard of the law in Singapore. Police do not tolerate such brazen criminal acts and we will spare no effort to hunt down those who commit these crimes, be they locals of foreigners, and bring them to justice." If convicted of vandalism, the men face up to three years in jail or a fine of up to $2,000, and between three and eight strokes of the cane. If convicted of trespassing into a protected area, they face up to two years in jail or a fine of up to $1,000 or both.

Two German men were charged Saturday with breaking into a Singapore metro depot and spray-painting graffiti on a train, offences punishable by jail time and flogging with a cane.

Andreas Von Knorre and Elton Hinz, both 21, were charged at a district court with committing trespass and vandalism in the early hours of November 8.

Both men appeared relaxed as the charges were read to them in German by an interpreter.

Prosecutors told the judge the two men will be remanded in police custody until November 28 “to assist investigations and re-enact the crime scene”.

The charge sheets said Van Knorre and Hinz broke into the suburban depot and spray-painted graffiti on the exterior of a metro train cabin. The depot is a restricted zone surrounded by fences topped with barbed wire.

The two men were extradited by neighbouring Malaysia on Friday after being apprehended at Kuala Lumpur International Airport as they were leaving for Australia.

The Straits Times newspaper said in a report Saturday the two men have visas to work in Australia.

For trespassing they face up to two years in jail, a fine of up to Sg$1,000 (US$800), or both.

For vandalism, they face up to three years in jail or a fine of up to Sg$2,000, and between three and eight strokes of a rattan cane -- a punishment dating back to British colonial rule.

Singapore, a leading Asian financial hub, is well-known for its tough stance on crime.

The city-state’s vandalism laws became global news in 1994 when an American teenager, Michael Fay, was caned for damaging cars and public property despite appeals for clemency from the US government.

In 2010, Swiss expatriate Oliver Fricker was sentenced to seven months in jail and three strokes of the cane for vandalising a train at a depot in the city-state.

Caning entails being whipped with a rattan stick on the back of the thigh below the buttocks, which can split the skin and leave lasting scars.
