SINGAPORE - The police have arrested a 39-year-old man for suspected involvement in a series of loanshark-related harassment cases which took place island-wide.

Multiple reports of loanshark harassment were lodged between Sept 24 and Oct 7 in the public housing estates at Jurong West, Toa Payoh, Woodlands, and Taman Jurong.

Officers conducted ground enquiries, obtained images of the suspect from various police cameras (PolCams) and town council cameras, and established the suspect's identity.

He was arrested on Nov 5 in the vicinity of Towner Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 39-year-old suspect is a debtor-turned-harasser, who locked up the main gates of debtors' residences with bicycle locks and defaced walls with loanshark graffiti.

A mobile phone, a black sling bag, and the attire the suspect wore during the offence were seized upon his arrest.

First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment face an imprisonment term of up to 5 years, a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, and will also be liable to be caned between 3 and 6 strokes.
