At about 7:30am on Monday morning, commuters travelling on the East-West Line were met with large crowds and delays yet they were left completely in the dark about what was going on.

SMRT failed to make any official announcement on the trains affected and they did not publicise the issues on their social media accounts.

The only warning that commuters received was on the platform itself when the notice wrote that there were 5 to 10 minute delays on the trains travelling from Outram to Joo Koon.

A TRS Reader who was caught up in the congestion explained that one of the trains had stopped and did not move for over 10 minutes. Then, passengers were asked to disembark and this lead to massive congestions on the platforms.

In fact, it even caused a safety issue at the top of the escalator as commuters coming up the escalators were unaware that there was no room on the platform and they were being squashed into each other as the escalator pushed more and more people onto the platform.

The TRS reader who took this video explained that SMRT staff also failed to stop people from going up the escalators despite there clearly being no more room on the platforms.

Because SMRT also never updated their social media accounts about the problems, mainstream media also did not cover the issue at all.

Perhaps they feel that the safety issues faced by commuters on the platform were not worth reporting because the delayed only lasted 5 to 10 minutes.

In reality though, despite the train only coming to a stop for about 10 minutes, the build-up of commuters on the platforms meant that commuters were forced to wait up to 20minutes before they could even board another train.

You let fucked up SAF people take charge, this is the kind of nonsense you'll expect.

You can bring them out of uniform and into civilian life, but they can't change their ingrained military mentality: pulling rank, 'taichi'ing away blame, 'take cover and save face', being regimental and generally lacking common sense, 'if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit' etc.

Anyone who has ever done NS knows what's going on.

Obviously there is a systemic problem with the whole PAP. It is just not limited to just the former ex-CEO who was Ho Ching's kaki.

Christopher Tan
The Straits Times
Friday, Sep 26, 2014
SMRT Corp has entered into a joint venture with Toshiba Corp to sell a new generation of train motors made by the Japanese electronics and engineering giant.
The venture, formalised at a global transport fair in Berlin yesterday, was inked by SMRT subsidiary Singapore Rail Engineering (SRE) - a company incorporated in June to market rail engineering expertise overseas.
SRE managing director Mario Favaits said: "We convinced Toshiba that it takes an operator to market to an operator."

He said SRE will be Toshiba's systems integrator and exclusive sales channel.
Its first client is SMRT Trains. Sixty-six of its oldest trains will be retrofitted to run on Toshiba's permanent magnet synchronous motors, which are said to be up to 30 per cent more energy-efficient, 12 per cent quieter and to cost less to maintain as they are lighter and have fewer parts.
SMRT said the new motors cost more, but declined to cite a dollar figure.
Mr Favaits said that from a life cycle perspective, they are worth it, and that "the payback is relatively short". Singapore joins Japan as the only countries to convert their mass rapid transit trains to run on this motor.
Mr Favaits said SRE's focus will remain on making SMRT a reliable and efficient operator.
"The credibility of the Singapore metro is crucial to our marketing strategy overseas," he said. Hence, whatever SRE does "will benefit" SMRT and generate intellectual property for it.
SMRT chief executive Desmond Kuek said the venture with Toshiba "is the first step".
The Temasek-owned transport operator has identified other areas of growth for its new arm.
Besides modernising rolling stock, replacing assets and infrastructural works like resleepering, it will market maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services. It is looking to set up a "regional MRO centre", to serve metro operators in Asia.
It also aims to become a vendor of risk-based maintenance software tailor-made for rail operators that offers "a full suite of services".
Apparently, there is none readily available on the market.
Mr Kuek said cities in Asia will increasingly look to building metros to meet transportation needs, and that will create a sizeable client pool for SRE which, he said, will contribute "significantly" to SMRT's bottom line.
Mr Kuek said forming SRE does not dilute SMRT's resolve in raising its service level here. On the contrary, it will help.
"We want to strengthen our engineering core. This is one manifestation," he said. "SRE's first customer is ourselves, before we market overseas."
He said an alternative would have been "to outsource our (train) upgrading to an external vendor".
"But what we're doing now is we're capturing knowledge... so as to build on our indigenous capability."
To do that, it has also hired more engineers. Today, it has more than 200 engineers - up from 150 last year. And it will have 300-plus in the next two to three years.
SMRT is also sponsoring a course at the Singapore Institute of Technology that focuses on rail engineering.
"We helped develop the course, and our senior engineers teach," said SMRT human resources director Gerard Koh. "In other words, we're growing our own timber."
It is looking to develop a post- graduate course too, for instance, a master's degree in engineering.
