Thai woman nabbed for trying to bribe cop to release boyfriend

KUALA LUMPUR - A woman tried to bribe the police to secure the release of her boyfriend from drug trafficking charges, but ended up being detained for corruption.
Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahim Hamzah Othman said the Thai woman, 34, went to the narcotics department at the Cheras district police headquarters to meet with the chief, Asst Supt Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal.
"She went to ASP Nik Ezanee's office at about 4.20am and made it clear that she wanted the officer to release her boyfriend, a 33-year-old Nigerian, who was arrested in connection with a drug case on Monday.
"In her effort, she brought RM17,500 (S$6,800) and put it on the table in the hope that my officer would take it," he said at a press conference at the district police headquarters yesterday.
ACP Abdul Rahim added that the woman decided to increase the amount when the officer refused to accept bribes.
"She even offered RM50,000 (S$20,000) if he could release the boyfriend by noon that day," he added. Due to the attempted bribery, the woman was instantly arrested and has been handed over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further action.
The Nigerian was arrested in Taman Connaught here, following several months of surveillance.
ACP Abdul Rahim said the suspect turned aggressive and resisted arrest when police approached him about 8pm.
"A scuffle ensued and he tried to run away, but we managed to catch him.
"Checks by police found that there were 12 compressed dried ganja leaves in one of his pockets. The drugs weighed about 218gm.
"We also noticed that he had dumped a plastic bag while he was running. In the bag were 19 small packets containing 417gm of compressed dried ganja leaves," ACP Abdul Rahim said.
Investigations led police to a house in Taman Taynton View, Cheras, where another 20 small packets containing 4.2kg of compressed dried ganja leaves were found, he said.
"The drugs were packed in a luggage and it was hidden in a closet in one of the rooms," he said.
