Ten real reasons why your Prime Minister asks you not to study for a degree:-

1. Economic genocide - to fulfill the theory of economic genocide and in order to bring in more loyal votes from incoming foreigners, our locals need to study less so that the doors can be held wide open for foreign talents to come in the name of talent shortage.

2. Too educated citizenry will rise up - a population that is too educated will be articulate and rise up to challenge the status quo of the current regime. Not so educated citizens tend to be followers and question very little.

3. Dependent on goverment for carrots - a population that is not too educated and well off will depend on the government for goodies especially during election period.

4. Dependent on foreigners - in order to appease educated foreign talents to stay on and even convert to be new citizens, many of them have become superiors in a company with many locals reporting to them. They could see that they have a stake in our country with a population that is not so educated. This is not so apparent in Australia or Canada whereby bosses tend to be white Australians still.

5. Class division - a society which has lots of class division tends to be easier to rule as the government sits sandwiched in between two or more classes of people pulling strings as it pleases. The current multi religious and racial situation here is one classic example of divide and rule.

6. Poor wages - a society that is poorly educated earns little and won't have time and energy to question and confront the government's inept policies. They are too busy trying to make ends meet.

7. Job creation made simpler - in order to appease a well educated workforce, the government needs to create better well paying jobs which could be challenging for our government in this trying time. A less educated workforce is easier to appease. Hawker and cleaner work are easier to create.

8. Less budget for education - less money will be spent on the population if only the current quota of 26% of the PSLE cohort enters university remains.

<ins id="aswift_1_expand" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: inline-table; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><ins id="aswift_1_anchor" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: currentColor; width: 336px; height: 280px; display: block; visibility: visible; position: relative; background-color: transparent; border-image: none;"><iframe name="aswift_1" width="336" height="280" id="aswift_1" frameBorder="0" marginWidth="0" marginHeight="0" scrolling="no" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowfullscreen="true" style="left: 0px; top: 0px; position: absolute;" allowTransparency="true"></iframe></ins></ins>

9. Population replacement - with the huge exodus of well educated Singaporeans leaving for overseas coupled with the mass foreign influx, its a matter of time before we become extinct and foreigners lord over us with PAP holding the trump card.

10. Locals versus foreigners - with the number of foreigners and locals now entering into a even population number, its again a classic divide and rule phenomenon with PAP holding all the cards to try and stay in power forever.

The reason why the honorable PM is discouraging the mad pursuit of paper qualifications is because he wants to encourage a broader development of various skills within the sinkie population. This will ensure that Singapore cements its place as a 1st world nation with a first world standard of living.

It is a known fact that in first world countries, trade skills are far more sought after than a degree. Careers in creative industries such as advertising, design and music do not require degrees either.

The idea that a degree is a passport to a comfortable existence is out of date the world over. I'm glad that the PAP has acknowledged this. It shows what a progressive government they are.

Gilbert equates not having a degree to being "less educated". Nothing could be further from the truth. Education is far more than a piece of paper. An educated person is one who understands what makes the world tick and this comes from opening ones mind and accepting new ideas. Dogma has no place in society. It hinders progression.

Hi Sam, pls comment. First World is falling apart now and the developing countries that value higher education and certificates are moving up and gaining economic might. Wise for us to follow the deteriorating first world countries?

In Singapore, why are scholars still put in leading positions in civil service once they graduate from unis?

Perhaps not yet falling apart (US is trillion dollars debt, Scotland to break away from England, some European countries dead broke, Australia's economy is weak), but economic might is weakening. So, should we still backtrack and follow the first world model of skills over degrees?

How did the nehs and pinoys land in sg for PMET jobs if they have no degrees and higher certs?

In Singapore, why are scholars still put in leading positions in civil service once they graduate from unis?

In Spore you have to join the rat race if you expect to be able to afford the basics in life. The PAP made the rules & that is clear to everyone. Even if you believe this LHL many hope to upgrade their passport & to do that you will have to be able to show some kind of qualification.

There are many reasons why some European countries have gone backwards in recent years and most are related monetary policy and over generous welfare benefits funded by debt. The percentage of the populace with tertiary education is not a factor.

For example, the percentage of the population with tertiary qualifications in Germany, the economic powerhouse of Europe, is only 27%.

On the other hand, Greece, a basket case by any measure, has put 33% of its population through a tertiary course but has no work for them after they graduate.

Yes, to migrate you need some kind of academic qualifications unless one is opting for business visa.
Go back to this, is LHL trying to trap uneducated sinkies in sg and be the slaves for themselves and fts?

Why you worry about the Ang Mohs? They themselves have no worries since cuntry like Sinkieland have not problem pumping funds into their country. While their citizens continue to enjoy life, Sinkies have to work until mati so that our gabernment can continue to be generous. Ah boh you think who wants to shake our bloody ministar's hands when they pay visit. :oIo:

You're making generalisations that simply are not true. I know many sinkies that have retired early myself included.

Retirement is a personal choice not a government decision. Those who want to retire well before 55 can do so simply by setting goals and working hard to achieve them.

Nobody said that life is a bed of roses. Rewards need to be earned through hard work and perseverence. They cannot be mandated.

The notion that the government has to create a system so that every mother's son can breeze through life without effort, retire at 55 and then spend their golden years earning a hefty pension so they can wine and dine and make merry till they meet their maker is simply ludicrous.

It might happen in the afterlife but it certainly doesn't happen in any country on planet earth.

On this score, have to agree with you.

When I look at someone to measure his or her potential for success in life, the first thing I look for is his/her personality, is that person outgoing and sociable, a go-getter, someone who always wants to take charge and lead the pack?

These qualities tell me far more whether this chap will rise to the top in life.

Fact of the matter is, without a degree, it would be hard to earn a decent living here in Singapore. How much are the starting salaries of Dip Holders and below? Even the Civil Service pays Dip holders very low starting salaries, and their increments and bonuses are pathetic.

Why do all sinkies think in terms of jobs and salaries? Have they been brainwashed so thoroughly that they consider employment to be the only option?

The majority of Sinkees would have to consider employment as their main option. You can't have a country where the majority are entrepreneurs. Might be wrong, but isnt this the case for all countries?
