Is Rising Crime Rate due to High GINI Index?

The rich are acquiring wealth and retaining most of the resources.

The poor are struggling with below min wage trying to survive in ever increasing and rising costs of living.

Some even don't have jobs.

So they had to resort to criminal activities!!

If the rich are more successful in acquiring more and more resources, more poor will be created!

Hence higher crime rate!! Tioh Boh!

The rich are finding out that other than Iceland, the rest of the world are not punishing them for the crime.
As for the poor, petty crimes will continue as usual.
Singapore crime rate is not low, just that people are not aware of what is really doing on. Also, people look away so no see, no crime. Cheating tourists is OK, esp the loaded ones.

The Gini coefficient is correlated with crime rate in any country, rich or poor. The higher the Gini, the higher the crime rate, generally.

Singapore has the highest Gini in the developed world (US is #2). So it stands to reason that our crime rate is fairly high and has been climbing in recent years owing to joblessness, stagnant wages, high cost of living and influx of foreigners.

However, the reason why our crime figures tend to be lower than many First Word countries is twofold: our draconian sentences, and the way we creatively classify our crimes so that many minor crimes, e.g. assault, are not included in the official figures.

Crime can be due to many reasons (jealousy, mental instability, etc.), however, two main factors contribute the most - unemployment, and quick high profits. If unemployment is high, many people will have lots of time, and their desperate situation will force them into criminal activities to sustain their lives. The other, quick and high profits - example if there is a large enough market for criminals to make lots of money (like selling drugs), organized crime will take control of the situation.

Cheers!

My parents were very poor before LKY changed their lives for the better but that didn't turn them into criminals.

Poverty is a pathetic excuse for breaking the law. Honest, hardworking people respond to poverty by working hard in order to break out of the poverty cycle.

There are honest poor folks everywhere. But desperate poverty is another thing. When your child is dying of starvation and your neighbour has plenty, what do you do? Some will just do the honourable thing and die. Some will beg. And some will rob or steal.

Plus, in a country with wide income inequality like Singapore, the sense of injustice and jealousy is much stronger than in a country where everyone is poor, e.g. Bhutan. When temptation is added to the mix, crime results.

yes singapore laws are one of the most draconianest.....that on top of our incarceration rate is one of the highest....we have more people in jail than anyone except USA.
