The expression "My face is very Chinese," coined by Taiwanese artist Ling Feng, has been given a new perspective. China Face, a hit variety TV show produced by Shangdong TV, has actually rendered what the average ethnic Chinese face looks like, supposedly back by scientific research, reports a government-run news website in Shandong.

According to the report, the production crew obtained information on the six most common types of Chinese faces from the province's police evidence examination center. They commissioned Horizon Research Group, a consulting and research firm, to run surveys based on the material with 500 interviewees from seven major cities in China. The data was then analyzed and drawn into faces with facilities from the evidence examination unit.

Based on the photo that shows the compiled "average" Chinese look, men have square faces, double-fold eyelids, and a narrow mouth with slightly thick lips. Females, on the other hand, have an oval shaped face, single fold eyelids, and lips that tend to be flat and wide.

"The average face in some way represents a cultural emblem of contemporary Chinese society," said Wu Dahai, director of the program. "The aim of the show is to instill pride in ethnic Chinese people towards their culture and bring them to identify with their country."

China Face explores the appearance and dress of Chinese cultures and traditions throughout history. It has successfully grabbed public attention and high ratings with the recovery of faces of Chinese ancestors and historical figures. Despite the good ratings, the director has not confirmed whether there will be another season since they are running out of inspirations related to the face.
