SINGAPORE: Police have nabbed a 19-year-old man who is believed to be involved in several cases of car rental scams during the Hari Raya period.

Police said it has been receiving reports about such scams since 26 July.

In all these cases, the victims had responded to online advertisements posted on a mobile phone application for car rental services. It is believed that these ads were posted by the suspect under various pseudonyms.

The suspect would send photos of the cars, purportedly owned by him, to the victims. After the victims have decided on which car to rent, they were told to transfer money to a bank account as payment for rental charges.

The suspect would then make arrangements to meet and deliver the cars to them. However, that did not happen and the suspect became uncontactable subsequently.

The suspect will be charged in court on Monday (Sep 1). If convicted, he could be jailed up to 10 years and fined. - CNA/xq
