Police detained a man suspected of stealing thousands of yuan in cash and jewelry from a woman he had met online during a rendezvous at a hotel by saying he had a gold allergy, media reported Saturday.
The man surnamed Xu, from Siping, Jilin Province, was arrested on August 26 after he allegedly tricked his new companion into taking off all her jewelry at the hotel by claiming he was allergic to gold.
The victim, surnamed Zhao, contacted police claiming that her cash and jewelry were stolen after their meet-up.
Zhao told police she first came in contact with the suspect, who then claimed to be surnamed Wang, through an online platform.
The pair checked in to a local hotel on August 11, where he convinced Zhao to remove her jewelry because his skin would be irritated by her gold necklace. She then took it off and placed it in her bag.
After their friendship was consummated and she stepped out of the shower, Zhao discovered the man had disappeared and she had been robbed of her cash and jewelry valued at around 16,000 yuan ($2,605).
Police found that the suspect used a fake ID to check in the hotel.
Local residents later tipped off officers to Xu's real identity and whereabouts.
