Re: Do you think this town council's action has gone too far?

No matter how you cut and slice this, whether in an Opposition run TC or PAP TC, they are all face the same issue. Do they go thru the legal route or do the TC write off their bad debts. If they write-offs others will stop paying and those that can pay will have to pay more. Its a zero sum game.

Potong Pasir did the same thing under Chiam because you just cannot shift the burden to the rest of the residents and it is not the roles of TCs to provide social welfare.

This is where the Govt as the central entity has to do the needful by creating the right mechanisms for intervention. Their attitude of "you die your business" has to stop. Their constant harping of various assistance schemes is not well known and they have been deliberate in keeping these as low profile as possible so that too many do not take advantage of it.

Why does this attitude have to stop? It's how mankind operated for hundreds of thousands of years. The welfare state as we know it today started less than 200 years ago. The jury is out as to whether it actually helps the species in the long term.

Re: Do you think this town council's action has gone too far?

please don't tell me NZ tax you how much. I no need to know.

your second post on reinforce the view of govt squeezing from the peasant class while giving tax break to the towkay.

The towkays are the movers and shakers of society. They are the ones that create employment, earn foreign exchange and move the country forward. Without towkays, there would be no jobs.

The Singapore government has its priorities right. It treats important people well which is how it should be. In NZ, it is the other way round, they treat the lazy, the useless and retarded far better than they treat the hardworking and the talented. As a result, the country is stagnant economically. The talented young leave for greener pastures and everyone loses as a result.

If it wasn't for dairy, minerals and forestry, the country would be bankrupt.

SO SAD, Woman, 75, detained for conservancy fee arrears

A WOMAN in her 70s was detained and summoned to court for owing $411 in conservancy fees, Shin Min Daily News reported yesterday.

Madam Lee, who lives in Lengkok Bahru, told Shin Min that she received the summons two weeks ago. She could not read English and had to ask a friend to translate it.

She is accused of owing the Tanjong Pagar Town Council $411 in conservancy fees, and can be fined $1,000 if found guilty.

According to the town council, Madam Lee has been late many times, and usually only paid when issued a court letter.

The 75-year-old said she seldom opens her letterbox. "My husband died in 2008, and I stopped working in 2003," she told Shin Min. "I pay only when I have money to spare."

She added that her husband had been ill before he died and she had been delaying the $55 monthly payments since then.

The town council said it has told Madam Lee repeatedly to inform it if she faces financial difficulty. It has issued her five court notices since 2000.

This month, Madam Lee said she turned herself in at a police station. She was offered bail, but chose to remain in custody. After two days, she paid the $1,000 in bail and was released.

Chia Shi Lu, an MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, said that residents who are unable to pay the fees can speak to the town council or approach the MPs for help.

He said the town council issues court summonses only to tardy residents after sending them reminders, visiting them in person, and not getting a response after six months.

easy to solve this case - just make her work as a cleaner or sweeper for her block of flats to offset the payment.

Yes, indeed so sad, the way things have become in Singapore.

This is a govt by the rich, for the rich, and of the rich. The poor, the downtrodden, and the dispossessed stand no chance.

This Chia fella was a last minute walkin at TP GRC. He's a well to do surgeon or something. Not expected to comprehend the probs of the poor.

Can the $ 411 conservancy be ignored after her jail term? If I understand correctly, she is still liable even after serving jail.

Prove that owning property in old age also no safeguard, still must have cash to pay property tax and conservancy fees for the so called asset. If not, be prepared to go to jail in old age! Time for PAP to have a pioneer package to help old people pay property tax and maintenance/conservancy fees! Especially for a private property, the two fees add up to no small sum, easily $300 or 400 per month!

Then let me slice it this way. If they had not gambled with their funds on the casino known as the stock exchange people will not be incensed. On one hand they are swimming in so much money they can gamble it away. On the other hand they cannot even write off a measly 400. The manpower involved alone in carrying out the entire process from court to warrant to arrest will take up a hundred at minimum. It's also outrageous that after boasting almost everyday on ads in TV of how they will take care of the elderly, only this will remain in people's minds. Their political sense is laughable! The right hand does not know what the left is doing!
