Some Singaporeans' love for cliquish behaviour

Saw that very often while working/studying in the UK where groups of Singaporeans will prefer to hang out together. Soon it will become a closed group given to gossip, bitching and whining, and you wonder why Singaporeans are generally not regarded as sociable creatures.

Very interesting study of group dynamics where different players have different roles. One will be the leader. One will be the nice guy who treats people to nice meals and tries to bridge differences - generally taboo to criticize him and anyone doing so is regarded as a mean bastard. And there will be the usual crop of cronies and ball carriers who will carry the group's ideas and defend the pack. Very predictable roles.

The leader will from time to time initiate a new gesture, such as a particular way of laughing, and then soon all the group members will start laughing in the same fashion like a bunch of monkeys.

alright even though this is a blatant whining thread i agree with u,iv backpacked solo twice to australia and i do tend to notice the behaviourial tendency u described.....it cannot be helped though,i have a feeling sinkies have generally poor social skills and fear of public speaking....myself included.sinkies also like to stick to their own cliques which unfortunately is other sinkies.....

the ang mohs on the other hand display a level of social extroversion u wouldnt believe.....and they tend to be better communicators.....ang mohs will often make the first move in a social situation....they have no fear of striking up a conversation with strangers.....even the children....to them its almost as if its rude not to talk or socialise.

sinkie is a doomed species....cannot survive in their own country,cannot survive outside their own country.

Was not exaggerating about the Singaporean behaviour abroad though. But I do find that if kids are exposed to foreign environments from young age, they tend to be more social and avoid such behaviour.

S'pore Indians are more sociable overseas imo. Chinese tend not to mingle with angmos.

I think Singaporeans exhibit cliquish tendencies because they are sheltered. Sitting in front of the computer all day, playing video games, watching movies, are introverted activities. Spend too much time doing these and your social skills become stunted. Locals move in cliques as they refuse to go beyond their comfort zones. They are also disinterested in meeting new people, which is a bad quality.

You don't have to go overseas. I was in NUS and it happened there too. Same tutorial group can have two cliques each keeping to themselves. Go figure.

This is because the ang moh pai Singaporeans like to follow a hierarchy system where different people can be viewed to be unequal, so they can continue being judgemental in their views towards people that they view as less worthy or low class, so that they can feel high-class and superior. It's all about the ego.

i dont blame them,just look at the leaders of our country and u see singapore is just a ironic self fulfilling prophecy......lee hsien loong lame,boring,awkward,with cringeworthy jokes and sheltered and childlike perception of reality and his comparisons of himself to other famous people is hilarious......not just lee hsien loong,iv heard a bunch of other ministers give speeches at MBS......same lame boring snoozefests with cringeworthy jokes and not much wisdom other than scripted textbook knowledge speeches....later other foreign leaders and ceos also gave speeches and u can hear the sharp wit and repartee and intelligence and the brilliant insights about world affairs and industry that they have.....this are the people who command real countries and built real companies and fought tooth and claw for what they had......not our textbook warriors that studied and sucked their way up the ranks and landed a cushy job in a government agency or a GLC.
