efficient from the perspective of government, not people.

its the people who are paying for the cost of this efficiency.

i was in sg recently to investigate the cause of sinkies' swarming of clinics and hospitals. not surprisingly, i found sinkies have becum hypochondriacs much like americans hooked on getting all sorts of medication from western-style health care to tcm, for instant relief. out of several patients i surveyed, close to half of the medication prescribed are useless and not addressing the issue which is mostly mental and based on paranoia. the other half are placebos ranging from anti-depressants to anti-allergens. there are even patients who have been taking wafarin, a blood thinning medication, for the last 2 years! no wonder they are fainting and dropping in the streets! sinkies lack good medical dialogues with their primary physicians due to language issues, plus the fact that doctors perceive them as sheep not knowing and understanding medication pitfalls, side-effects and limitations. doctors have a problem convincing sinkies to chill off and stop seeing them for mundane consultations. because sinkies want instant cure based on medication, doctors have little choice but to prescribe placebos. tons of them.

by the way, i also had to rummage through the rubbish bin in sg for food and reading material. you see, we americans are so poor now, thanks to obamacare, and addiction to medication. :p

how are anti-depressants and anti-allergens placebos? they serve to treat a medical condition. a sugar cube will be a placebo.

as to the language issue, its to be expected since most of the doctors in the polyclinics are FTs who cant communicate with locals.

anyway you have avoided the issue of the people paying the price and cost for this efficiency - its simply passing the cost on to patients. this policy might have been defensible in the early days when the country was broke. but now....?

anti-depressants and anti-histamine tablets are not lethal, not prone to overdose, and are easily obtainable off the shelf in a retail pharmacy. you don't need a doc, let alone a specialist, to prescribe them. a sugar cube or mint may help soothe frayed nerves, but the sinkie patient wants to see tablets and capsules in fancy packaging with fancy names from fancy foreign companies such as merck or glaxosmithkline. they are expensive designer placebos.

the cost of healthcare per capita is already low by oecd standards, and it can be lower if sinkies refrain from visiting a&e for less serious outpatient issues and hospital stay for care that can be done at home. many of the elderly patients warded in hospitals with non-acute conditions are abandoned there by their children and relatives, much like the elders abandoned in hospice care facilities all over the island. this is the work of sinkies and not the pap.

The PAP says nurses are unskilled workers and thus deserve low pay. Are the doctors, directors, ministry of health elites chewing up the $8 billion?

As elites, the PAP & their family get free medical coverage. The 90 year old leech probably spends more time visiting the doctors than in parliament:rolleyes:

Singaporeans and Asians in general are responsible for the surge in antibiotic resistant strains of superbugs because most DEMAND antibiotics for every ailment under the sun including all viral infections which antibiotics are absolutely useless against.

In Singapore, I was given antibiotics every time I went to the doctor for a fever. I didn't ask for them and I never took them. It was "standard issue" for every consultation.

In NZ, I have not taken any antibiotics for the last 10 years. The doctors here won't prescribe then unless you have a bacterial infection.

i was flabbergasted to find out that sinkie doctors in clinics are prescribing antibiotics to patients who have been infected with flu, which is viral, not bacterial. these are sinkie doctors who graduated at nus. i explained to them that vaccines combat viruses while antibiotics combat bacteria, and bacteria like microbes can still survive in harsh environments while viruses die under ultraviolet light, yet they kept pushing antibiotics to patients despite the viral ailment. this confirms your astute observation.

The reason was revealed by one of my doctors friends. He said that if he refused to prescribe antibiotics, the patient would label him as "useless" and simply look for another doctor that ceded to their demands.

While doctors are considered to be "professionals", any practice still has to be run as a business first and foremost and if you are left with no patients as a result of taking an ethical stand against the overprescription of antibiotics, you might as well close your clinic and find some other way of earning a living.

Doctors in Singapore either have to dish out antibiotics for everything or risk going under.

The other demand of sinkie patients was they all want a "jab" to quicken the healing process regardless of what sort of ailment they have. Saline solution is the cheapest placebo with no risk of side effects so that's what most patients get. The pay good money for it too and feel "much better" after a mainlining a dose of NaCl dissolved in distilled water.

if everyone do juicing and be a vegetarian, there is no need for any enormous healthcare spending.

I learnt about what antibiotics can do on my science project during my secondary school days and from then onwards, i reject antibiotics.

then patient education is the way to go and promoting the use of pharmacies. but i'm sure many private clinics would go out of business if we went that way. vested interests are getting in the way of reform. there is also the side issue of needing MCs when we're sick, so that rules out pharmacies.

as for the elderly being abandoned, this is a social issue that has not been addressed. obviously families are facing financial difficulties in paying for the care of their parents. there is a growing need for more help in this area and calls for more and not less spending on healthcare.

In Sierra Leone, health spending stood at $96 (£58) per person in 2012. This compares favourably to Liberia ($66) and Guinea ($32). By comparison the UK spends $3,648 and US $8,895

US_spends_much_more_on_health_than_what_might_be_expected_1_slideshow.jpg

How much do Singapore gaberment spend on health care for the people?

Or is it even possible that instead of spending what Sierra Leone or Liberia, Singapore extract even more money from the people than spending that money
Of course, we know they spend millions and billions on their own pay and for FTs here.

OMG from the graph Sg losing to 3rd whole country like Chile/Mexico/Slovenia ...............maybe more if graph extended included all country.

Killing of the PAPs must start soon.
Their blood and blood of their relations 3 generations removed must flow to wash away their filth
