UN: SINGAPORE GETS "RED" RATING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION
The UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has scored Singapore with a "red" rating for Human Rights.
This is the worst rating and it was given to Singapore because Singapore has only ratified 4 out of 18 core UN Human Rights Treaties.
International Treaties such as those on human rights need to be signed by countries to show that the country agrees with the principles set out in the treaty.
Afterward, the country must make legislation which will make the rules in the treaty actual laws in their country. This process is called ratification.
Singapore has only signed and ratified 4 of the UN's human rights treaties putting it in one of the worst positions worldwide.
The other ratings include "orange" where 5 to 9 treaties have been ratified, "light blue" where 10 to 14 treaties have been ratified, and "dark blue" if 11 to 14 treaties have been ratified.
Even countries such as China, North Korea, Somalia, Israel, Zimbabwe are doing better than Singapore.
Our Neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia are in the 'orange' and 'light blue' categories respectively.
Of the 4 treaties, that Singapore has ratified, they relate to issues such as the use of child soldiers, as well as the rights of women, children and the disabled.
Even with these treaties, Singapore only implemented them with several exceptions and in some cases, took years after signing the, to actually ratify them.
Some of the Human Rights treaties that have not been ratified or even signed by Singapore include those related to torture, the death penalty, Racial discrimination, as well as various civil and political rights.
