Man United's midfield has a lot of holes. If something is not done during this transfer window it can kiss goodbye to top 4.

Also, Van Gaal shouldn't play 3-5-2 in all circumstances... your flanks are going to get exposed without a hard working wingback.

Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal moves forward in Fredy Guarin swoop as Vidal bid STALLS
MANCHESTER UNITED boss Louis van Gaal is set to step up his efforts in signing Fredy Guarin after the club's intended move for Arturo Vidal stalled yet again.

Daily Star By Gary Jones / Published 15th August 2014

NEW DEAL: Louis van Gaal may step up his efforts in signing Fredy Guarin after the club's intended move for Arturo Vidal stalled

Van Gaal is desperate to land the combative midfielder but chief executive Ed Woodward's efforts have yet to come to fruition because of Juventus' reluctance to sell the Chile international.

Reports claim that United have offered £40m plus Javier Hernandez and Nani to prise him away from the Old Lady as they look to add more summer signings in the next two weeks.

Van Gaal has completed deals for just two players since taking charge at Old Trafford, with Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera joining for a combined fee of £60m.

But with talks currently going nowhere for Vidal, van Gaal will reportedly look to Inter Milan's Guarin instead.

United will face competition for his signature from Juve, however.

New Old Lady boss Massimo Allegri is a fan of the Colombian, and according to reports is eager to sign the 28-year-old this summer.

Guarin is an upgrade but I'm not sure how much it'll address the current issues with the midfield.

Manchester United prepare £100m package to lure Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford•Manchester United are willing to spend up to £100m to bring Angel Di Maria to Old Trafford
•The £100m would cover both the Real Madrid winger's £50m transfer fee and his wages at United
•It is expected that United would pay him about £200,000 a week
•United boss Louis van Gaal has told chief executive Ed Woodward to sign Di Maria before the transfer window shuts
•The home defeat to Swansea has only made Van Gaal more determined to bring new players in
•Di Maria is aware of United's interest and is surprised by the huge sums being proposed
•United are also working on deals to bring in Ajax's Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo of Sporting Lisbon
By Ian Ladyman

Manchester United are prepared to commit as much as £100million to their pursuit of Angel Di Maria as the ailing Barclays Premier League club try to beef up Louis van Gaal’s squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

United manager Van Gaal is desperate for world-class additions over the next two weeks and his mood was certainly not improved by Saturday’s opening 2-1 defeat to Swansea at Old Trafford.

The Dutch coach needs a central defender and a holding midfield player but has also told United chief executive Ed Woodward to do all he can to bring winger Di

•Marcos Rojo's proposed £16m transfer to Manchester United could end up in court... while a Luisao move could pave the way for Arsenal to sign £8m Kostas Manolas
•Manchester United close to signing Marcos Rojo for £16m after Sporting defender hands in transfer request
•Louis van Gaal targets Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind to offer wing wizardry as Manchester United manager settles on best team for Premier League title challenge

To that end, it is understood that United have told the Argentina international that, once performance-related incentives are taken in to account, they will pay him in the region of £200,000-a-week to put him in the same ball park as current attacking stars Wane Rooney and Robin van Persie.

That kind of salary over a five-year contract would take United’s investment in Di Maria to £100m when a transfer fee in the region of £50m is included. Di Maria is aware of United’s capacity to pay big wages and has told his immediate family of his surprise that the English club’s offer outstrips anything so far made by other suitors, including mega-rich PSG of France. It remains to be seen now if United can strike a deal with Madrid.

Louis van Gaal (right) has told Ed Woodward to sign Di Maria before the transfer window shuts. Van Gaal and Woodward know they cannot tempt Di Maria – or any of their other targets – with Champions League football so financial offers have to be high end if they to overcome that obstacle.

Saturday’s dismal defeat to Swansea came with a clutch of first-team players absent with injury but still went a long way to place United’s current predicament in context. Despite starting the summer with the intention of signing players as soon as possible to aid pre-season preparations, United have signed only two players – Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera – and have not done anything now in the market since the last week of June.

Additional targets: United are also hoping to bring in Ajax's Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo of Sporting Lisbon. Rojo likes to have a hit from range as this compilation shows United have also been working on deals for Sporting Lisbon central defender Marcos Rojo and Ajax’s Holland international Daley Blind.

Woodward has already submitted a £16m bid for Rojo but is being frustrated by a row between Sporting and the player’s agent. Sporting only own 25 per cent of Rojo, meaning that they will need to push the asking price as high as possible to get any kind of return on the player. Ajax boss Frank de Boer, meanwhile, has offered United some hope by suggesting the Dutch club would be open to an offer for the versatile Blind, a member of Van Gaal’s Dutch squad at the World Cup.

•Marcos Rojo's proposed £16m transfer to Manchester United could end up in court... while a Luisao move could pave the way for Arsenal to sign £8m Kostas Manolas

Pure window dressing - nothing more, nothing less. It's Woodward again talking big to try to convince the fans that he's doing something. He's convincing no-one. We all know nothing will happen. He's either too incompetent to bring in the players his managers request - and Moyes inferred as much in his interview - or he's doing the Glazers' bidding: keep saying the right things and hope that the gullible 75,000 who troop along for every home game - and the millions of others all over the country and round the world - will be taken in and not realise the Glazers' have no interest in the wellbeing of the club, merely the many millions they can keep taking out of our pockets to fill their wallets and prop up their ailing businesses in America. Yes, Moyes was incompetent, but he was hung out to dry by Woodward and the Glazers, who made him their patsy for the transfer failings. How long (if he hasn't already done so) will it be before LVG realises the insincerity of those who employ him?

With the transfer window fast closing, Ed is still sleeping. They need two defenders, a stopper and a striker for now.

Vidal is a must have. Look for another keeper once this is settled.

It's harder to attract top talent without Champions League football. The Man Utd 'brand' can only take you so far.

Vidal can win more trophies with Juventus. What can he win with Man Utd?

Its not about CL football. The bonuses that they get from CL winners vary with each club but it is nothing compared to a long term contract that is worth millions. Yup, its about $$$ and the way I see it Ed is dithering over a quid here and there. He needs to step back and look at the bigger picture. IF Man Utd fails to qualify for CL this season, it will be 30% less from the Adidas contract and they can't afford losing that kind of money.

Exit Nani, aka baloon king (in my books, no loss) with Rojo package

Nani set for Manchester United exit as Louis Van Gaal steps up bid to sign Marcos Rojo
Aug 18, 2014 22:30 By David McDonnell

The United boss wants to send Nani back to Sporting Lisbon as part of the deal to bring the Argentina defender to Old Trafford.
Nani looks set to leave Old Trafford Louis van Gaal is ready to show Nani the door in order to solve Manchester United’s defensive crisis.

The new Old Trafford boss is desperate to land Sporting Lisbon and Argentina World Cup star Marcos Rojo after sloppy goals cost his side in a 2-1 defeat against Swansea on the opening day.

And United are confident they are now closing in on a deal that will see them fork out £16million AND send the Portuguese winger back to the club where they signed him from in 2007. United failed to land Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels or Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona from Arsenal.

Now they have stepped up their efforts to sign Rojo, with Van Gaal upset over the manner of his first loss.

Talks between United and Sporting are continuing, and out-of-favour Portugal star Nani potentially holds the key to the deal going ahead.

His lack of consistency has convinced United the time is right to offload him, with Van Gaal happy to lose him in order to strengthen the areas that were horribly exposed by Swansea.

Although he recently signed a new deal and came on as sub on Saturday, Nani has no future at Old Trafford. United’s injury list includes Jonny Evans, Rafael, Michael Carrick, Jesse Lingard and Danny Welbeck.

Rojo, who can play left-back or centre-half, has issued an apology to Sporting after he refused to train in what was seen as a blatant attempt to force through his move to United.

“I was hot-headed and I’m sorry,” said Rojo, who resumed training yesterday.

“Sporting signed me when I was not at my best and gave me the opportunity to play for a big club in Europe. I would like to thank the trust they had in me and resume training.”

Not sure if they have their priorities in order. We've conceded buckets of goals in the past couple of seasons due mainly to defensive errors. An ageing defensive line was a factor and the rotation at the back from the beginning to the end of the season didn't help. We 'lost' three leaders in the back 4 this season and it left a void yet to be filled.

Forget Jones, he's already screaming for the treatment room after just one competitive game. What they urgently need is an intelligent defensive leader that can organize the back 4. None of the defenders fit that role. Looking back at Ferguson's era, you would have realized that the teams were built on the strength of the back 4 and not the other way around.

Our dodgy keeper who is often glued between the sticks is not going to help matters. its been 3-4 seasons already and I haven't seen any improvement or consistency from this keeper that would help build confidence in the backline.

This loss is probably a blessing in disguise, jolting that useless Woodward into action and unveiling how rotten the squad is.

Next match agst Sunderland is tough as well, playing away.

Time for the two dua kangs to deliver, one saying he is prepared to pay world record price for a player, the other saying he can sign anyone in 24 hours.

Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo has announced that he is joining Manchester United.

The Argentina international, 24, apologised to Sporting this week after attempting to force through the transfer when the English club had a reported bid of 16 million pounds rejected.

However, he told Radio Continental in his homeland that the move is now in place.

"I am at home with the family in Portugal, but getting ready to travel to Manchester tomorrow [on Tuesday]," he said. "The truth is this is a dream. The World Cup was really nice, and now this step in my career. I am very happy."...............................

Exclusive: Tottenham Prepare Ambitious £24m Bid for Man United Pair
by Christian Bailey August 19th, 2014

White Hart Lane side chase unwanted Old Trafford duo.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has set his sights on a pair of Man United players who do not appear to be integral to Louis van Gaal’s plans this season.

The White Hart Lane side are looking to bring in further additions before the summer transfer window closes and are readying a £24m bid for Mexican striker Javier Hernandez and midfield powerhouse Marouane Fellaini.

Pochettino feels his attack needs strengthening, which isn’t a huge surprise given the poor displays put in by Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado last term, and is known to be a long term admirer of 26 year old forward Chicharito.

The Old Trafford man has struggled to retain a foothold in the Man United starting eleven over the past four seasons, making just six Premier League starts in 2013/14, and could be open to a move to north London.

Hernandez is a proven Premier League marksman having netted 59 goals in 152 appearances since moving to Man United in the summer of 2010, 69 of those appearances coming from the bench.

Belgian international Fellaini has been strongly linked with a loan move to Napoli but Man United are looking to permanently offload the former Everton man and as such could scrap any dealings with the Serie A side in favour of a possible sale to Spurs.

Pochettino has failed with moves to bring in his former Southampton charge Morgan Schneiderlin and has now looked to switch his attention to Fellaini who the Argentine feels can offer steel in the Tottenham midfield as well as a real threat in the final third.

Having spent six seasons in England Fellaini may well prefer the option of a move to Tottenham over an overseas switch and the presence of national team colleagues Jan Vertonghen and Nacer Chadli could further convince the Man United man to consider a move to the capital.

Mauricio Pochettino has been told by chairman Daniel Levy that funds are available for new signings but the Argentine manager has been pushed to trim his expansive squad and a number of players have been linked with Tottenham exits.

The likes of Michael Dawson, Vlad Chiriches, Kyle Naughton, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Sandro and Roberto Soldado have all been made available for prospective suitors.

For one, u still have a medical (Loic Remy in mind) to pass. Second the cash plus player loan didn't go down to well with Nani. Third, if a competing bid comes in at the final hour, it could undermine the transfer. With the transfer window closing fast, you want to avoid it at all cost.

Checked the website shortly after Rojo went on air with Argentinian media. There's a 'protocol' if you like where transfers are concerned. United like most other clubs are usually very careful with the media release. Rojo just got too excited......lol.

Sealed, even if Rojo jumped the gun. U-turn for Nani :p

Manchester United: Marcos Rojo deal agreed as Nani leaves
Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Argentina defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.

United said the deal, which Sporting say is worth £16m, is subject to a medical and personal terms.

Sporting have also confirmed Nani, 27, is returning on loan, seven years after the winger joined United from Lisbon.

Left-sided defender Rojo, 24, played in all six of Argentina's World Cup games on their run to the final in Brazil this summer.

_76901918_marcos_rojo.jpg

The deal for Rojo had appeared imminent since the player told Argentine radio station Continental on Monday it would be a "dream to play at Manchester United".

Last week he refused to train with Sporting due to his frustration at not being allowed to leave, although he subsequently apologised.

" A further announcement will be made when the process is complete," said United in a message on the club's Twitter account on Tuesday.

In a statement released to the Lisbon stock exchange , Sporting released the payment schedule agreed with United for the player.

Sporting will receive £8m immediately, with further instalments of £4m being paid on 1 December this year and 1 July, 2015.

In addition they will get 20% of any sell-on fee for Rojo over £18.4million.

His versatility makes him a good fit for United manager Louis van Gaal's preferred 3-5-2 system.

Rojo, who joined Sporting from Spartak Moscow in July 2012, missed the Portuguese club's first league game of the season last weekend.

Marcos Rojo played two seasons in Portuguese football. United have been searching for a central defender following the summer departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Van Gaal missed out on Thomas Vermaelen earlier this month after the Belgian opted to join Barcelona from Arsenal.

United have signed just two players since the end of last season.
