Site engineer jailed six months for molesting neighbour in lift

By Ian Poh

SINGAPORE - While heading home after work one evening, a site engineer noticed a neighbour walking past and thought she was attractive. He ended up following her to her block and molesting her in a lift.

On Tuesday Wang Xiong, 24, was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to outraging the 27-year-old's modesty on Jan 27 this year. One other count of molest, committed against a 21-year-old girl six days earlier in a similar fashion, was taken into consideration.

The court heard that around 7.45pm that night, the Chinese national had exited Pioneer MRT and was walking towards his rented flat along Jurong West Street 65.

This was when he spotted and tailed his neighbour, who lived in the adjacent block of flats.

[h=1]Maid jailed 4 months for spraying insecticide into drinks of her employer's daughter[/h][h=2][/h]
By Ian Poh

SINGAPORE - Unhappy with her employer's daughter for scolding her, a maid decided to spray insecticide into her beverages. But the daughter got suspicious after her bird's nest and soya bean milk tasted and smelled funny, and caused her to burp repeatedly. She kept samples and sent them to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority, which confirmed the drinks were laced with chemicals.
On Friday, Anah Dewi Lanjarsih, 24, was sentenced to four months in jail for doing a rash act to endanger the life of Ms Ng Jia Min, 25.
The court heard that the Indonesian national had done the deed on Jan 3 as an "act of revenge" for various scoldings she had received from Ms Ng over her work. While alone in her employer's home in Serangoon around 6pm, Lanjarsih took a can of Baygon Protector Flying Insect Killer to the kitchen. She sprayed the pesticide into the container and carton which contained the drinks, knowing that only Ms Ng would consume them.
Pleading for leniency, her lawyer S. Balamurugan said Lanjarsih was deeply unhappy and wanted to change employer. She felt unfairly treated by Ms Ng and had acted without thinking about the consequences, he said.

Jail, driving ban for death by rash act

Ian Poh The Straits Times Monday, Jul 28, 2014

20140727_liuzhongwei_ST.jpg

Liu Zhongwei, 32, accused for causing death of his girlfriend by doing rash act not amounting to culpable homeicide at Bird Park Drive.

Not wanting his girlfriend to follow him home after a tiff, Liu Zhongwei locked his car after getting in. But he could not drive off as she was standing in front of the vehicle.

The former crane operator began to inch his Toyota Wish towards her, forcing her to move sideways. He then did a swift right turn and got out of the parking spot.

In doing so, the left side of the car side-swiped Ms Li Minna, 32, who fell to the ground, injuring her head.

This incident happened around 9.30pm on July 14 last year.

Ms Li died in hospital four days later.

During a six-day trial in May and June, Liu, a China national, insisted that he had checked both the front of the car and the sides before moving off.

He said he did not know how Ms Li, also a China national, ended up on the ground of the open-air carpark in Bird Park Drive, on that fateful night.

But yesterday, he was convicted of rashly causing Ms Li's death and jailed for 10 months, after a district court viewed camera footage and heard evidence from an independent witness.

He was also banned from driving for eight years.

Liu was also found guilty of failing to stop after the accident and failing to make a police report, as well as for removing the car without permission from police.

Together, the three offences resulted in another two weeks' jail for him.

He was, however, acquitted of getting a witness to keep information from the police.

On the night of the incident, he was at a karaoke lounge in The Village @ Jurong Hill when he was confronted by Ms Li. They went to a carpark nearby, where they had a quarrel.

Ms Li followed him to the car and got in when he unlocked it. But he duped her into getting out by walking away. He then got in and locked the doors, starting the chain of events that led to her death.

For causing death by a rash act, he could have been jailed for up to five years and fined.

Liu is appealing against the court's decision.

SINGAPORE - A maid who hit a retiree with a bamboo pole and stamped on her foot, causing her to fracture a bone, was sentenced to three months' jail on Tuesday.

Myanmar national Cing Sian Huai, 24, had pleaded guilty to inflicting the fracture on Madam Grace Toh Ah Bay, 66, on April 27 in the Bedok flat where she worked as a maid for Madam Toh and her mother, Madam Seah Cheng Poh, 93.

The court heard that the incident happened before 9pm that day when Cing refused to continue cleaning after Madam Toh scolded her for not cleaning the dishes properly. Cing said she did not want to continue working and insisted on returning to the employment agency but Madam Toh refused to unlock the gate. Cing tried to force open the lock using a window wiper. When this failed, she started hitting the gate with a bamboo pole, breaking the wiper and pole in the process.

Madam Toh tried to calm Cing down but the maid hit her hand three times with the pole instead, stamping on her foot after the attack caused her to fall. The attack left Madam Toh with bruises on her arms and a fractured metatarsal bone in the foot. She was given two weeks' hospitalisation leave.

A network engineer who pushed and fought with a motorcyclist was jailed for a day and fined a total of $3,000 on Wednesday.

Nathan Adrian Tallack, 39, an Australian, admitted to using criminal force on Mr Lee Yao Rong Muhammad Saifuddin Ilyan Lee by pushing him and causing Lee and the machine to fall along Chai Chee Road.

He also pleaded guilty to disturbing the public peace by fighting with the 25-year-old driving instructor. A third charge of causing hurt was considered during his sentencing.

The court heard that Tallack was driving a car along Chai Chee Drive on April 1 this year when he was involved in a near-collision with Mr Lee, who was riding his motorcycle.

Mr Lee thought he saw Tallack give him a rude hand gesture. He was angry and made a U-turn to chase and confront the motorist.

He stopped beside Tallack's car, knocked on the passenger window and motioned for him to lower it.

Both argued, and Tallack exited the car to continue the disagreement. He then pushed Mr Lee. who was seated on his motorcycle, causing rider and machine to topple over.

Two witnesses saw what happened. One of them, property officer Mohamad Sikandar Saraju, 30, recorded the incident with his mobile phone.

Mr Lee stood up and swung at Tallack, who pinned him down on the road. Both fought. Mr Sikandar told them to stop and called the police.

Both men had minor injuries.

Tallack could have been jailed for up to three months and fined up to $1,500 for using criminal force. The maximum penalty for disturbing the public peace is a year's jail and a $5,000 fine.

British national charged with endangering safety of boy

SINGAPORE: A 38-year-old British national, who is believed to have entered Singapore illegally, has been charged with endangering the personal safety of a two-year-old boy.

The accused, Adam Whittington, is believed to have entered Singapore with two others - 39-year-old Wilson Allan from Australia and a 30-year-old woman. The woman, also a foreigner, is believed to be the mother of the boy, but she cannot be named as it may lead to the identification of the child.

All three are believed to have entered Singapore by sea from Malaysia, arriving at Raffles Marina in Tuas shortly before 6.09am on Tuesday (Aug 19). Raffles Marina is a country club with berthing facilities, but it is not an authorised landing place.

At 8.40am on Tuesday, Whittington allegedly went to an apartment in the western part of Singapore, where the boy is believed to be living with his guardians. Whittington is alleged to have forcefully grabbed and pried the boy from the arms of his guardian, causing the boy to suffer a fall.

Channel NewsAsia understands the boy's parents are separated, and he was living with his relatives at the time of the incident. Neighbours told Channel NewsAsia they heard screams on Tuesday morning, and an elderly woman was seen crying at the guard house as the boy was missing.

It has not been established whether the child at the centre of the case is a victim, as further investigations are needed. The prosecution has asked for a one-week adjournment. In the meantime, all three accused persons will be remanded at the Police Cantonment Complex.

For the rash act, Whittington faces a jail term of six months or a fine of up to S$2,500, or both. For entering Singapore illegally and not reporting to an immigration officer, all three accused face a fine of up to S$4,000 or a jail term of 12 months, or both.

The case will be further mentioned in court on Aug 28. It is understood that the boy has been returned to his guardians.

Bread maker who had sex with colleague's underage daughter jailed three years

SINGAPORE - A bread maker who had sex with his colleague's underage daughter when he stayed at their flat was jailed for three years on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old Chinese national - who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity - admitted three charges of sexually abusing the girl in 2012 and 2013 when she was between 13 and 14 years old.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chloe Lee said investigations showed that the victim, a secondary school student, was not close to her parents and would confide in the man about school and personal matters. Her mother had returned to China, which caused a rift between her and her father.

The accused was considered a sworn brother by the girl's father, and he asked him to talk to his daughter and help him look after her.

SINGAPORE - A woman was jailed for 12 weeks on Tuesday after being convicted of five maid abuse charges - including biting the helper's finger.

Ngoa Choi Yin, 48, a Singapore permanent resident, was originally tried on eight charges of causing hurt to her Indonesian maid Siti Nurbayah, 25, at her Beauty World Plaza apartment in Upper Bukit Timah Road.

But she was cleared of three charges at the close of the prosecution case, and convicted of the other five in July this year.

District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam convicted her of slapping the maid on her cheek and ear region; biting her; slapping her face; using her hands to pound her back region; grabbing her hand and biting her finger and using her elbow to knock her upper arm.

The offences took place between May and October 2012.

The maid had testified that she was beaten every day by Ngoa who would slap, hit and bite her.

She ran away on Oct 27 that year by using a screwdriver to open the gate of the unit. She was directed by a passer-by to a maid agency located on the lower floors of the same building.

The employment agency operator saw her crying outside her office and bruises on her body. She called the police.

Her lawyer Alina Sim said Ngoa was suffering from depressive disorder, and has to take care of her three-year-old child, who is severely autistic.

Ngoa could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined up to $7,500 on each charge.

Woman pleads guilty to entering Singapore illegally to look for son

SINGAPORE: A mother pleaded guilty on Thursday (Sep 4) to entering Singapore illegally via a chartered vessel from Malaysia, so that she could take back her two-year-old son, who had been living here with his paternal grandparents.

The 30-year-old woman - whose name and nationality cannot be revealed to protect the identity of the boy - has the custody of her son, as ruled by the English Court in January. However, instead of entering Singapore legally, the woman came over in a vessel from Langkawi along with two other foreigners, and disembarked at Raffles Marina on Aug 19 at about 6am.

The court heard the woman's husband had previously made police reports against her and she was afraid she would be arrested upon her arrival, if she had tried to clear immigration.

Speaking through an interpreter, the woman told the court she misses her son and had been depressed. "Desperate" to see her son, the woman sought the help of non-governmental organisation (NGO) Child Abduction Recovery International in June, to bring her son back to London.

Her travel companions - British citizen Adam Christopher Whittington who runs the NGO, as well as Australian national Todd Allan Wilson, who drove the vessel - also pleaded guilty on Thursday to entering Singapore illegally.

The court heard Wilson, who had slowed the vessel to allow the woman and Whittington to disembark, was arrested in the waters around Raffles Marina. The woman and Whittington then proceeded to look for the boy.

Whittington also admitted to "arm-locking" the boy's grandfather and hurting the neck of the boy's grandmother in a scuffle at their home.

Describing this as a "peculiar" immigration case, prosecutors asked the court for some time to prepare their case for sentencing. The trio will learn of their fate on Monday (Sep 8).

For their immigration offences, they face a maximum penalty of a year's jail and a S$4,000 fine. Whittington also faces up to two years' jail and a S$5,000 fine for hurting the boy's grandmother, and three months' jail and a S$1,500 fine for "arm-locking" the boy's grandfather. - CNA/ek

Construction worker jailed three years for criminal intimidation

By Elena Chong Court Correspondent

A CONSTRUCTION worker left a colleague clinging on for his life to the side of a 19th-storey condominium site after a workplace row.

With his whole body dangling over the side of the building, 23-year-old Bangladeshi Islam Md Nurul was so scared he even shouted for his mum and dad to help.

His co-worker - Chinese national Li Zheng, 33 - was yesterday jailed three years for criminal intimidation after admitting a charge reduced from attempted murder.

The pair had been working on the Silversea condominium worksite in Marine Parade Road on March 14 last year when Li allegedly suspected his colleague of stealing materials.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chee Min Ping told the court that the incident occurred after both men had been waiting for a lift at level 19 of Tower 4.

When it arrived, Li got in and prevented Mr Nurul, who was pushing a wheelbarrow, from following.

When he asked Li "why you stop?", Li stepped out and scolded him with a Hokkien vulgarity. Mr Nurul swore back at him - at which point Li picked him up by his neck and right knee and carried him to the railing, while threatening to kill him.

Mr Nurul's entire body was dangling over the side of the building but he clung onto a metal rail and shouted for help before the lift operator went to his rescue and helped him climb to safety.

Li had another charge of pushing Mr Nurul against nearby metal railings taken into consideration during sentencing.

Mr Josephus Tan, who acted for Li under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, said the accused was remorseful and determined to close this "dark chapter of his life". He plans to start life afresh back in China with his wife and young daughter.

Li could have been jailed for up to seven years.

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested two more suspects, aged 20 and 22, in connection with the murder of a 47-year-old man at Pearls Centre on Sep 7.
With the assistance of the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the suspects were arrested in Malaysia and extradited back to Singapore on Sep 9, said the Singapore Police Force in a press statement on Wednesday.
RELATED STORIES

  • Body of man found in Pearl Centre's abandoned car park

The two suspects will be charged in Court 26 at 9.00am on Sep 11 for the offence of Murder with Common Intention.
Sunder Rangasamy, 27, and Thiagu Muniandy, 23, were charged earlier this week for the alleged murder.
The SPF thanked the RMP, in particular their Criminal Investigation Department and Johor State Police, for their support for this case.
According to reports, police were at the crime scene for over nine hours on Sep 7, after receiving a report about the body at 1.16pm.
The body was found on the 11th storey of the building along Eu Tong Sen Street. Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead.
The victim was lying on the floor face-up when found and was surrounded by brown glass fragments, likely to be beer bottles, reported Lianhe Zaobao. According to The Straits Times, reddish-brown stains were also seen smeared on the wall.
The newspaper also noted that sections of the car park in the building above the seventh storey had been closed previously and no cars were allowed in. It is understood that the closed sections are not illuminated and are usually in pitch darkness at night.
As the building houses several night clubs and bars, there are frequently people who loiter and drink in the abandoned sections of the car park, said some people familiar with the place.
The 23-storey Pearls Centre houses the Yangtze Cinema, residential units, offices and shops. It will be making way for the new Thomson MRT line later this year.
