Will you make the cut?
All-round Finance Managers, Legal Counsels, Inventory Managers and Sales Administrators are just four of the skills in demand as Singapore’s expanding economy continues to create new jobs, says recruiting experts Hays in Singapore.
Singapore’s economy grew a better-than-expected 4.1 per cent in 2013, and is tipped to grow between three and four per cent this year.
According to the recruiter’s latest Hays Quarterly Hotspots list of skills in demand for the April to June quarter, Singapore remains a candidate driven market where there is strong competition for good talent in all areas.
“Many employers in Singapore tell us that skill shortages remain an issue,” says Chris Mead, Regional Director of Hays in Singapore & Malaysia.
“Results from our Hays Global Skills Index published late last year show that Singapore received a talent mismatch index score of 5.9. This relatively high score means that the numbers of long-term unemployed and vacancies are both increasing, which suggests that the available labour does not always have the skills employers want.”
Perhaps that partly explains why demand for contract and temporary candidates is growing in Singapore. For example, Chris notes that in the accountancy and finance jobs market, more candidates are gaining exposure to contract opportunities and in turn are warming to the benefits of the flexibility they offer.
“We are seeing more contracting roles for Financial Analysts, all-round Accountants with SAP ERP system knowledge and Financial Planning & Analysis professionals,” he said.
Meanwhile, Singapore is also seeing growth in the legal jobs market. According to Chris: “In response to the increase of new projects and developments there has been a spike in the need for Legal Counsels in the engineering and construction industry.
“We’ve also seen steady growth in jobs in the logistics industry across the board.”
The other highlight in the current jobs market is in sales. According to Chris, “Good growth in the economy has led to high demand for Sales Administrators as companies expand their revenue generating teams. These people require a lot of after sales support to increase the pace of sales."

Boot-licking, ass-kissing and cock-sucking skills are always in great demand, regardless of industry.
