12 arrested for white collar crimes

SINGAPORE - Twelve suspects were arrested by the police in a 2-day island-wide operation against white collar crime.
The suspects, consisting of 8 men and 4 women aged between 19 and 67 years, were arrested for for various commercial-related offences such as cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust in separate cases.
In the operation, which took place on Mar 17 and 18, officers from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted raids at Ang Mo Kio, Boon Lay, Tampines, Marine Parade, Sengkang, Yishun and Redhill.
Three of the suspects are believed to be involved in criminal breach of trust as a servant by converting either sales proceeds or salaries that they had been entrusted with, into their personal use.
Another 6 suspects are believed to be involved in various forms of cheating by dishonestly inducing victims to part with their money or make unauthorised purchases.
The remaining 3 suspects are believed to be involved in forgery of signatures or documents to cheat for personal gratification.
One of the suspects, a 31-year-old man, who was found in possession of a knuckleduster during the arrest will be charged in Court tomorrow.
Investigations against the remaining suspects are ongoing.
Under the Penal Code, Cap 224, whoever commits the offence of cheating under Section 420, shall be liable to be punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years, and a fine.
Those found guilty of the offence of forgery for the purpose of cheating under Section 468, shall be liable to be punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years, and a fine.
Those found guilty of criminal breach of trust as a servant under Section 408 shall be liable to be punished with imprisonment of up to 15 years, and a fine.
Under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Cap 65, any person who, otherwise than for a lawful purpose carries or has in his possession or under his control; any scheduled weapon shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 6 strokes and, in the case of a second or subsequent offence, to imprisonment for a term of not less than 2 years and not more than 8 years and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 6
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Keok Tong San, commended his officers for their efforts in the successful operation. He said, "The Police take a serious view of individuals who commit commercial related offences and would ensure that they face the full brunt of the law."
